Arangas: Caves, Cultural Heritage and Pico Turbina

Arangas: The Campo de la Iglesia de San Pablo de Arangas ensemble establishes a direct connection between a yew tree and an element of tangible cultural heritage; as a historic site, it is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural (Asset of Cultural Interest). In Arangas, this brings together a specific site of cultural and historical importance with an unusual natural feature.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Pablo in Arangas is a single-nave church with a portico on the south side and a square bell tower. It was founded between 1570 and 1590; the bell tower was added later, around 1610. The church’s architectural form and period of construction make it a distinct focal point alongside the archaeological sites.

The Cueva de Los Canes in Arangas is protected as an archaeological cave and is an archaeological site containing a burial and engravings. It preserves rock art consisting of lines engraved with the fingers. The site therefore represents both the history of the archaeological site and the surviving traces of human creation.

The cave system of Arangas lies on the steep southern slope of the Sierra del Cuera and along the middle course of the Río Cares. It contains an archaeological sequence from the Upper Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age. The Cueva de Arangas contains human remains that may indicate burial activity during the final third of the 8th millennium BC. The two cave references differ in their archaeological context and chronological classification.

Carlos Soberón Gómez is registered in Arangas as a dairy producer under the protected designation of origin Cabrales. Cheese adds a clearly identified local production connection to the historical and scenic themes.
