Discover Dolná Ždaňa: Holiday Apartment and Folk Architecture

Dolná Ždaňa preserves the character of a well-preserved street village with authentic folk architecture. In the lower part of the village there are three-room stone houses dating from the development of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The development of Dolná Ždaňa began in the mid-14th century; at that time, the village belonged to the estate of Revište Castle.

Culture and History

An important building in the village is the Church of the Holy Trinity. It was completed in 1847 in the Classical style with surviving Baroque elements. The building has a single nave, a polygonal chancel termination and a tower integrated into the gabled façade. Inside, a small side altar with sculptural drapery and six small sculptures from the mid-19th century have been preserved.

The local cultural heritage also includes several memorials. Dolná Ždaňa has a wayside statue of Saint Florian, as well as a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. A memorial plaque commemorates citizens who were tortured and killed in the Second World War. Another memorial plaque is dedicated to the writer Elena Čepčeková.

Landscape

The western part of the municipality of Dolná Ždaňa lies on the eastern slopes of the Vtáčnik mountain range. The range consists predominantly of andesite. The Vtáčnik slopes associated with Dolná Ždaňa are forested with fir and beech stands. The municipality therefore brings together village development and a clearly defined mountain landscape.

Dolná Ždaňa extends along the right bank of the Hron River. The Prochotský potok also flows through the municipality. Medokýš is designated as a mineral spring in Dolná Ždaňa. These three features—the riverbank, the stream and the designated mineral spring—are among the named landscape characteristics of the village.

Centre and Transport

The centre of Dolná Ždaňa consists of a public space shaped by the church, a small park and public greenery. The Prochotský potok flows through this space, which is also crossed by a local road. The church, green spaces, stream and road are therefore all located within the same central public space.

The nearest railway station is Hliník nad Hronom, located 1 km from Dolná Ždaňa. It is situated on electrified railway line 150 from Zvolen to Nové Zámky, which continues directly to Bratislava. Thus, in addition to the local road network, there is also a specifically named rail connection linking the village with the cities mentioned.

Region

Dolná Ždaňa currently belongs to the Hlinické Pohronie microregion. This microregion was founded in 1999 to develop the municipalities, the region and tourism. This affiliation places Dolná Ždaňa within a regional association whose founding purpose is explicitly focused on these three areas of development.
