Holiday Apartment in Vieska: Church History and Educational Trail

The parish church in the Vieska district of the municipality of Ladomerská Vieska is the Church of Christ the King. It was probably built as early as the 13th century. A parish and a church are documented in Vieska for the years 1332 to 1337; Vieska itself is documented in a charter from 1352.

Culture

The Church of Christ the King was originally dedicated to All Saints. Part of the tower and the presbytery with a polygonal apse survive from the original Gothic church building. The presbytery has a net-rib vault dated 1481. The original Gothic church was remodelled in the Gothic style at the end of the 15th century, remodelled again in 1552 and extended with a transept in 1928.

Individual furnishings also span several centuries. A late Gothic bell from the original church has survived to this day; it probably dates from the first half of the 16th century. On the western interior wall of the Gothic presbytery is an uncovered consecration cross in the form of a wall painting from the late 14th century. The tomb of Žigmund Dóczy lies in a crypt beneath the church. Above the portal of the original Gothic presbytery hangs a circular, wooden and polychrome epitaph of Žigmund Dóczy from 1647, bearing his coat of arms and a surrounding Latin inscription.

Work is currently being carried out on the church of the Ladomerská Vieska parish. The restoration includes the roof, façade and interior.

History

Vieska was a border settlement on the edge of the two historic estates of Beòadický and Šášovský. It is also historically documented that residents of Vieska traded fruit and vegetables in Kremnica.

Nature and Trails

The host municipality of Ladomerská Vieska lies in the Žiar Basin and extends to the northwestern slopes of the Štiavnica Mountains. The municipality’s transport links also help define its geographical setting: Ladomerská Vieska lies at a junction of roads along the main Bratislava–Košice–Trenčín corridor. The main railway line towards Bratislava and Zvolen runs through the cadastral area of the host municipality.

In the vicinity of the host municipality, an easy hike, particularly suitable for families with children, leads to the nearby municipality of Šášovské Podhradie. The Ladomerská Vieska–Šášov educational trail passes through Ladomerská Vieska and Šášovské Podhradie and ends at Šášov Castle. It has five stations, including the church in Vieska, and presents cultural and historical sights in Ladomerská Vieska and Šášovské Podhradie.

The educational trail to Šášov Castle is three kilometres long and is suitable for history-focused outdoor lessons.
