Stará Kremnička lies in the southwestern part of the Kremnica Mountains, in the Jastrabská vrchovina highlands and in the valley of the Kremnický potok. A prominent viewpoint is Mount Kamenica at an elevation of 525 m. From there, panoramic views extend over Kremnica, the centre of Europe, the Kremnica Mountains, the Žiarska kotlina Basin, the Vtáčnik Mountains, Pohronský Inovec and the Štiavnické vrchy.

Landscape and Nature

The surroundings of Stará Kremnička are predominantly characterised by deciduous forests. Mixed forests occur in some places, containing numerous springs and spring wells. The landscape also includes many forest fruits, mushrooms and wild animals.

Hiking and Trails

The Náučný chodník Kamenica educational trail is a circular route of approximately 6 km, for which a walking time of around three hours is indicated. It has six stations and combines historical, natural-science and geological interpretation. The “Žel. zastávka Stará Kremnička” stop is the sixth station of the Náučný chodník Kamenica educational trail.

The fourth stage of the Barborská cesta between Kremnica and Sklené Teplice also passes through Stará Kremnička. The Barborská cesta is a 183 km circular route with nine stages that can be completed on foot or by bicycle. It provides insights into the region’s mining history as well as the extraction and processing of metallurgical ores.

History and Culture

An important building in the village is the “Kostol sv. Imricha” church. It was built in 1890 on the site of a church destroyed by fire in 1888 and is still in use. Another listed object is “KOMÍN – vetracia šachta Hlavnej dedičnej štôlne” near house no. 112, under ÚZPF number 2728/1.

The railway is also part of the village’s history. The Zvolen–Vrútky railway line runs along Stará Kremnička and is known by the nickname “Slovenský Semmering”. Stará Kremnička railway station was built between 1911 and 1915. Near the village of Stará Kremnička, the Štefánik armoured train saw combat for the first time during the Slovak National Uprising.
