The University of Coimbra was founded in 1290. UNESCO describes the University of Coimbra – Alta and Sofia as an outstanding example of a university city. The Jardim Botânico covers more than 13.5 hectares and was established to complement the study of natural history and medicine at the University of Coimbra. The monasteries also offer different ways of accessing history. The Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha has a publicly accessible area featuring a visit to the ruins and an interpretation centre where archaeological finds from the excavations are presented. At the Mosteiro de Lorvão, a contextualised tour leads through the gateway, church and cloister; there is also a new museum interpretation centre. The monastery is also associated with the production of manuscripts in its scriptorium, particularly the Apocalypse of Lorvão, which has been recognised as UNESCO Memory of the World.

Those travelling with children will find life-size and scale models at Portugal dos Pequenitos in six themed areas. These include regional houses, monumental Portugal, Coimbra, the Portuguese island territories and Portuguese-speaking countries. Another historic place to visit is Castelo de Montemor-o-Velho: the visitor route is designed as a circular route and can be started at any point.

River, Mountains and Trails for Different Days of Travel

At the riverside bathing area Praia Fluvial de Palheiros e Zorro, visitors can enjoy kayaking, canoeing, fishing and beach volleyball. The landscape can also be explored along different routes. The 4.6-kilometre circular route PR6 FIG Rota das Salinas runs through the Mondego estuary between centuries-old salt pans and fish-farming ponds in wetlands classified as a Ramsar site. The PR3 FIG Rota da Boa Viagem is an approximately 12.6-kilometre circular route through the heart of the Serra da Boa Viagem. It also reveals the biodiversity and geological features of the protected natural monument of Cabo Mondego.

Inland, the landscape extends as far as the Serra da Lousã. In the Coimbra District, it reaches an altitude of 1,205 metres at Alto de Trevim and extends across the municipalities of Miranda do Corvo, Lousã, Góis and Penela. The PR5 LSA route begins at Castelo da Lousã, initially passes the Capela do Sr. dos Aflitos and follows a long forest path towards Porto Pisão. It then descends along the Ribeira de São João, from where the Aldeia do Xisto do Talasnal can be seen.

In Gondramaz, there is the low-barrier trail “Caminho do Xisto Acessível de Gondramaz”, which is intended to provide people with disabilities with an accessible circular route. The specific subregion should match the planned priorities.

Flavour and Dark Skies

Special products are also part of the region’s identity. Mel da Serra da Lousã honey has held protected designation of origin status since 1996. It is characterised by a dark amber colour, a dense consistency and a strong flavour. Pastel de Tentúgal was first mentioned in writing in 1611. The pastry is associated with the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Natividade, also known as Nossa Senhora do Carmo de Tentúgal, and has a thin, crisp puff-pastry shell with an egg filling.

On clear evenings, the Dark Sky® Aldeias do Xisto initiative offers opportunities to observe the sky, planets, stars and constellations. It includes seven municipalities in the Coimbra region: Arganil, Góis, Lousã, Miranda do Corvo, Oliveira do Hospital, Pampilhosa da Serra and Penela. This means that travel planning can extend beyond day trips when nature observation and experiencing the landscape are important.
