Tábua: Culture, Trails and Landscapes along the Mondego

Tábua combines impressive cultural experiences with trails through a varied landscape. Those looking for a mix of history, nature and regional cuisine for their holiday can put together a range of day plans here: from churches and historic buildings to riverside hikes, mountain-bike trails and cultural events. When choosing your holiday apartment, it is therefore worth considering first whether you want to focus on sightseeing, active days outdoors or a combination of both.

Culture, History and Regional Traditions

One of the notable buildings is the Capela do Senhor dos Milagres, an 18th-century Late Baroque building classified as a building of public interest. The PR4 Trilho dos Gaios trail also begins at this chapel. The Igreja Paroquial de Tábua also offers an insight into the history of the town. Built in the 19th century, the church has Santa Maria Maior as its patron saint and contains an important collection of sculptures, church silver and liturgical vestments.

Further historic sites can be found in Midões. The Pelourinho de Midões stands in the centre of the town and is likewise classified as a building of public interest. The Casa da família do Desembargador Taborda has been documented since 1756, has an attached chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora das Dores and is classified as a monument of public interest. The Pelourinho do Coito, also known as Pelourinho do Couto or Coito de Midões, is associated with one of the small medieval municipal districts.

For a trip with a cultural focus, the Centro Cultural de Tábua offers weekly film, theatre and music performances. Three multipurpose rooms are used for municipal programmes for seniors, as well as art and theatre programmes. The Sala Museu Etnográfico da Casa do Povo de Tábua focuses on agricultural practices, customs, and traditional arts and crafts. Regular activities there also recreate rural practices. Regional cuisine includes Bucho à Moda de Tábua, Chanfana, Torresmos, Tiborna and wine from the Dão region.

Rivers, Rocks and Trails for Active Days

Pedra da Sé is a distinctive granite formation and a natural viewpoint over the Rio Mondego and the Barragem da Aguieira. Those who enjoy exploring on foot can take the PR4 Trilho dos Gaios, an approximately 17-kilometre hiking trail between Tábua and Vila Nova de Oliveirinha. Near Vale de Gaios, the trail crosses footbridges through a landscape along the Rio de Cavalos, where old mills and waterfalls provide distinctive highlights.

Other trails also reveal different sides of the surrounding area. On the PR1 Caminho do Xisto de Midões, the small Rio Cavalos is a scenic attraction in the Sumes area. Pine trees and cork oaks shape the landscape there; foxes and wild boar are also found in the area. The PR2 Caminho do Xisto de Sevilha passes the Rio Cavalos, a waterfall, old mills and a medieval bridge. The Ponte romana dos Sumes is approximately 50 metres long, spans the Rio de Cavalos, has a roadway about 3 metres wide and a single semicircular arch. It was probably part of the Roman road connection between Bobadela and Viseu.

Which Accommodation Suits Your Travel Plans

The Grande Rota do Alva passes through Tábua and forms part of a 77-kilometre linear route that also connects Penacova, Vila Nova de Poiares, Arganil and Oliveira do Hospital. Along this route, the dams and the morphology of the Alva enable leisure activities in harmony with nature, including canoeing and some extreme sports. For mountain-bike days, the Rota dos Trilhos includes 15 single-track trails.

If you want to combine several interests, plan your choice of holiday apartment around the experiences that matter most to you. For cultural days, churches, historic buildings, the museum and the cultural centre are the main attractions; for hiking or cycling days, the respective starting points and routes are decisive. Praia Fluvial da Ronqueira offers reserved parking spaces, a lifting platform and signage in Braille and with large pictograms for visits with reduced accessibility barriers.
