Condeixa-A-Nova: Discover Conímbriga, Ega and culture

Conímbriga: Ruins, mosaics and a long history

A particularly vivid example is the House of the Fountains, with a large, landscaped peristyle courtyard and polychrome mosaics in situ. The aqueduct associated with Conímbriga is also a prominent feature of the site: it is approximately 3,550 metres long and ends at the baths south of the ruins.

The permanent exhibition at the National Museum of Conímbriga illustrates the history of the site from the end of the second millennium BC to the 6th century AD. It presents everyday objects and covers, among other topics, the forum, the domus, trade, religion and the presence of the Suebi and Visigoths. It is located in the former manor house of Quinta de São Tomé, which is classified as a municipal cultural asset.

Practical information for your visit

The National Museum of Conímbriga is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00; ticket sales end at 17:15. The opening hours provide a clear framework for planning your day. Conímbriga is served from Coimbra by buses via the IC 6 and the Condeixa–Tomar route. It was built in the early years of the 16th century on the site of an old Templar fortress; the work is attributed to Marcos Pires. The Pelourinho of Ega features a prism topped by a pine cone with heraldic motifs, including the national coat of arms and an armillary sphere.

Further historical traces can be found in the Palácio dos Figueiredos, commissioned by the Figueiredo family in the 17th century. Such varied buildings are well suited to an itinerary that focuses not only on a single monument, but on several layers of time and forms of historical memory.
