Figueira Da Foz: Atlantic, Salt Pans and Culture

Figueira da Foz lies at the mouth of the Mondego where it meets the Atlantic Ocean, combining water, dune landscapes, salt pans and a multifaceted culture. Water activities at Praia do Cabedelo

Praia do Cabedelo lies south of the mouth of the Mondego. Wooden walkways lead through the surrounding dunes to the beach. Castles, churches and museums

The Forte de Santa Catarina was an essential part of the defence system of the port and bay of Figueira da Foz and Buarcos. In Buarcos, the Torre de Redondos and the Fortaleza de Buarcos also recall the area's military past. The Torre de Redondos is the surviving corner section of a medieval fortress with a watchtower; it presumably belonged to a group of coastal watch posts intended to protect the anchorage in Buarcos Bay. The Fortaleza preserves significant sections of its original walls and towers and is frequently included in tourist tours and local cultural events.

The Casa do Paço was built between 1690 and 1704 by D. João de Melo, the Bishop-Count of Coimbra. It is classified as a protected cultural asset and has around 6,700 Dutch tiles in the Delft style in four rooms on the upper floor. The Igreja do Antigo Convento de Santo António has been classified as a protected cultural asset since 1978 and contains carved wooden altarpieces, Mannerist paintings in the high choir and sculptures from the 16th to the 18th century.

The Museu Municipal Dr. Santos Rocha displays permanent collections of religious and contemporary art, numismatics, Indo-Portuguese furniture, ethnography, weapons and archaeology. Thematic museum units are also dedicated to the sea and salt production. The Núcleo Museológico do Mar covers traditional fishing techniques, cod fishing, clothing and customs, the natural heritage and local history. It is complemented by a room for a permanent exhibition, a documentation centre with a library and a laboratory for experimental sciences; the Querer Saber area focuses on scientific culture and environmental education.

Plan visits and local cuisine

In 2026, the Palácio Sotto Maior will offer a programme of guided visits from June to September. During this period, the building is open from Tuesday to Sunday. Plan your visit accordingly based on your travel dates. As a regional speciality, you can also discover Papas de moado, a traditional dessert from Figueira da Foz made from a porridge of flour, blood and sugar.
