Pinheiro de Coja lies on the right bank of the Rio Alva. Religious buildings dating from different centuries, folk activities and the connection to the GR51 offer a range of themes for planning a trip. You can get to know the village through its architectural history and festival culture, or focus on hiking connections and regional traditions.

Chapels and churches with traces from different periods

The main portal of the Capela da Sra. da Graça bears a dated inscription from 1786. The present chapel was rebuilt at its current location in 1946–1947, incorporating elements from the earlier chapel. Bogalhas is said to have had a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Graça as early as before 1728. This older chapel history is reported, but is not stated as a verified fact.

The Igreja Matriz de Pinheiro de Coja also has several building phases: it was altered in the 18th century and rebuilt in the 20th century. Its patron saint is São Tiago. These two churches reflect different periods: an inscription and a reconstruction at the Capela da Sra. da Graça, and alterations and a later rebuilding at the Igreja Matriz.

Other chapels add to the picture. The Capela das Almas in Venda do Porco is a small square building; inside is a cross dated to 1794. The Capela de Santo Cristo, located outside Pinheiro de Coja near the cemetery, dates from the 19th century. The Capela de Santo Ovídio in Pinheiro de Coja contains an image of the saint.

Folk culture, festivals and crafts

The Casa do Povo de Pinheiro de Coja is a cultural and recreational association founded in 1938. Its Rancho Folclórico takes part in festivals, celebrations and pilgrimage festivals. A delegation from the Grupo Cultural „Verde Pinho“ of Pinheiro de Coja took part in the Festival Culturas do Mundo in 2022. Folklore is thus represented both in the activities of a local group and at events held on specific dates.

The XXXIII Festival de Folclore Grupo Cultural Verde Pinho in Pinheiro de Coja was scheduled for 4 August 2024. The Festa em Honra de Santo Cristo was planned there for 16–18 August 2024. A later edition of the traditional Feira de São Tiago took place on 26 July 2026 at Parque de Santo Cristo; it was organised by the União de Freguesias de Pinheiro de Coja e Meda de Mouros. These dates show a variety of event formats, without implying an annual calendar.

Crafts and food are also part of the local traditions described. A local cultural report from 2008 describes the making of Bainhas abertas, often associated with embroidery or lacework, as a craft tradition that was declining at the time. Cabrito assado, roast goat, is named as a typical dish of Pinheiro de Coja in a local account from the same year.

Hiking connections and regional discoveries

The GR51 – Grande Rota do Alva – is a hiking trail connected with Pinheiro de Côja and Meda de Mouros. In the wider region, the linear trail runs through the municipality of Tábua and is 77 kilometres long. This figure refers to the entire trail, offering a different scale from a stay focused on the churches and folk culture of Pinheiro de Coja. Distinct from this is the historic so-called Caminho da Moura: it ran from Covas to Pinheiro de Coja and crossed the Alva at Coja.

In the wider region, the Museu Etnográfico de Meda de Mouros regularly organises activities to revive rural traditions. These include corn-shucking gatherings and flax-growing evenings featuring traditional music and folklore. If you would like to take part in an activity, check the details with the museum. Also in the wider region is the Ponte do Cadoiceiro, a slate-slab bridge formerly used by animals transporting grain and flour.
