Penacova combines impressive landscapes along the Mondego with hiking trails, monastic history and its own sweet speciality. Anyone planning a trip with nature, culture and a variety of day-trip ideas will find several clear focal points here: the Livraria do Mondego shapes the landscape along the banks of the Mondego as a natural monument, while routes such as the PR 1 and PR 4 reveal different sides of the surrounding area. Landscape along the Mondego and distinctive trails

The Livraria do Mondego is a natural monument that shapes the landscape along the banks of the Mondego near Penacova. Its form was shaped over the course of more than 400 million years. Direct access is possible via the Estrada Nacional 2. This makes it possible to incorporate this distinctive landscape feature specifically into a day’s plans without tying the visit to a particular length of stay or a fixed schedule.

Two hiking trails with different characteristics are available for active exploration. The PR 1 – Penacova e o Rio Mondego is designed as a discovery route covering the cultural, geological, landscape and natural heritage. It is therefore suitable for planning that aims to combine several themes. The PR 4 – Ribeira de Arcos runs mainly through the Ribeira de Arcos valley and passes windmills, watermills and several waterfalls. Those who prefer to follow a valley course and individual landscape features will find a different focus here from the more broadly designed discovery route.

Culture between monastery, church and viewpoint

Penacova also offers specific points of interest for days focused on culture. The Centro Interpretativo do Palito is divided into eight exhibition rooms. The production of the palitos originated at the Mosteiro de Lorvão: the nuns initially made them to decorate the monastery’s pastries. This makes it possible to discover a local tradition not only as a craft, but also in connection with the history of the monastery.

The Mosteiro de Lorvão was founded in 878 by Cluniac monks of the Benedictine order. During the reign of Afonso Henriques, it developed into an important centre for the production of illuminated manuscripts. The Igreja do Mosteiro de Lorvão contains a choir stall with 102 seats made of rosewood and walnut. In Penacova itself, the Igreja Matriz was largely built during a major construction campaign in the second half of the 16th century. The Miradouro Emygidio da Silva viewpoint was inaugurated in 1908, adding a place with its own history to the cultural attractions.

From Coimbra, you can reach Penacova via the IC2 and the IP3; take the exit at the Penacova junction. For up-to-date information on site, the tourist office, Posto de Turismo, is located in Largo Alberto Leitão. It is open from 10:00 to 18:00 from 15 March to 14 October and from 09:00 to 17:00 from 15 October to 14 March.
