Arganil – Nature and Cultural Experiences in the Serra do Açor

Arganil combines the landscape of the Serra do Açor with schist architecture, river landscapes, hiking trails and a diverse cultural history. The Serra do Açor is a mountain range in the Central Cordillera consisting predominantly of schist and encompassing large parts of the municipality of Arganil. Landscape between Forest, Cascade and River

An important natural area is the Paisagem Protegida da Serra do Açor. The protected area is located in the municipality of Arganil and covers 382 hectares in the municipalities of Benfeita and Moura da Serra. A 68-hectare Biogenetic Reserve also extends across the Mata da Margaraça. There, numerous native trees and shrubs as well as mosses, lichens and fungi can be observed, including oaks, strawberry trees, hazelnut trees, cherry trees, elms and heather.

At Fraga da Pena, a 60-metre-long pedestrian platform made of schist has been installed. It is intended to enable people with reduced mobility to access the cascade. Water also shapes other travel experiences: Praia Fluvial da Cascalheira is a river beach at a weir on the Rio Alva, while Piscina de Fórnea is a bathing area between the houses of the village of Fórnea. Weirs and the morphology of the Rio Alva also enable activities such as canoeing and some adventure sports.

Those who want to travel on foot will find various options. The Caminho do Xisto de Benfeita is a circular trail that starts in the town centre. By contrast, the GR 51 – Grande Rota do Alva is a 77-kilometre linear long-distance hiking trail through the municipalities of Penacova, Vila Nova de Poiares, Arganil, Tábua and Oliveira do Hospital. Schist Villages and Cultural Discoveries

Piódão forms an architectural ensemble characterised by the age, unity and state of preservation of its buildings. The houses and streets are largely built of schist and connected by schist steps. The village is classified as an Imóvel de Interesse Público. Benfeita is also one of the 24 Aldeias do Xisto and forms part of the region’s cultural highlights. In Arganil itself, several places tell the story of its history and regional life. The Pelourinho de Arganil recalls the history of the town and the foral granted by D. Manuel in 1514. The Núcleo de Arqueologia covers prehistoric remains from the Nekropole dos Moinhos de Vento, gold mining on the Rio Alva and life in the Roman military camp. The Capela de São Pedro is a regional Gothic religious building from the late 13th century and is classified as a National Monument. The Igreja Paroquial da Vila de Arganil has a panelled ceiling with hagiographic paintings by Oliveira Trovão, commissioned in 1762; the present building dates from the late 17th century.
