Armazéns brings together the history of the salt pans and trails through the wetlands of the Mondego Estuary. Between centuries-old salt pans and fish-farming ponds, a landscape unfolds that combines nature watching with the tradition of salt. The Núcleo Museológico do Sal, the Salina do Corredor da Cobra and the trails through the marshes offer different ways to explore this destination.

Salt History and Remembrance

The Núcleo Museológico do Sal opened on 17 August 2007 to interpret, promote and communicate the centuries-long relationship between people and the salt-pan area of Figueira da Foz. The landscape can therefore be seen as more than a natural environment: the long connection between people and salt is also part of its history. The cultural and environmental complex also includes a river route through the Mondego River estuary.

Restoration of the Salina do Corredor da Cobra began in 2003, and it returned to full operation in the same year. Together with the centuries-long relationship between people and the salt pans, this provides a clear sense of time: a long tradition and a specific new beginning in 2003. The so-called green salt is known locally as “cachelro”; Salicórnia grows spontaneously in the Salina do Corredor da Cobra.

Salt-Pan Trails and Birdlife

The 4.6-kilometre Rota das Salinas is a circular trail through the Mondego Estuary, between centuries-old salt pans and fish-farming ponds. The area is designated a Ramsar site because of its wetland characteristics. The trail therefore passes through a landscape whose wetland character is explicitly recognised.

The Rota das Salinas leads to a birdwatching point where waders and seabirds can be observed. The salt pan includes a range of environments and habitats with a great diversity of species, particularly birds that are present there throughout the year. The route thus combines views of the salt-pan landscape with a specific focus on nature watching.

The Rota das Salinas starts and ends at the Salina Municipal do Corredor da Cobra. The recommended starting point is near the museum and salt warehouse; the trail initially passes through the Salina do Corredor da Cobra. The approximately five-kilometre Rota Pedestre das Salinas is a walking route through the salt-marsh ecosystem. Both route descriptions put the salt-pan landscape at the centre, but take different approaches to the circular trail and the marshland.

Dated Experiences Centred on Salt

At the 2023 and 2026 editions of “Marnoto por um Dia,” families were invited to learn the traditional art of salt production alongside the marnotos of the Salina do Corredor da Cobra. Anniversary editions in 2023 and 2025 also featured “A safra à moda antiga,” a historical re-enactment in which salt was carried from the salt pan to the warehouse.

The 19th edition of “(A) Gosto com Sabor a Sal” took place in 2026 at the Núcleo Museológico do Sal in Armazéns de Lavos. It brought together cultural, scientific, environmental education and health-related activities. In 2026, the “Salina Criativa” programme included workshops on making a rodilha, preparing bath salts, folding an origami flamingo and the Salina Criativa laboratory. These dated examples show different ways to engage with the traditions and culture of salt; they are tied to their respective programme editions.
