Coimbra: University, History and Gardens

Coimbra combines a university culture that has developed over centuries with significant religious buildings, museums and green spaces. The University of Coimbra – Alta and Sofia developed over more than seven centuries within the old town. Miguel, you will also find a Baroque organ dating from 1737 with more than 2,000 pipes. The chapel was probably built in the 12th century as a private oratory of the former royal palace. The Mosteiro de Santa Cruz was founded in 1131 and is considered one of Coimbra's oldest and most important monuments. The tombs of a king and his son, D. Sancho I, are located there.

The Sé Velha de Coimbra also represents the city's long history. It is the only Portuguese Romanesque cathedral from the Reconquista period that has survived to this day in comparatively intact condition. Its cloister was begun in 1218 during the reign of D. Afonso II and is one of the earliest Gothic structures in Portugal. The capitals decorated with plant and animal motifs form one of the country's richest Romanesque iconographic programmes. The Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha is highlighted nationwide for its size and described as the largest Gothic building. Public visits to the ruins and the interpretation centre pass through a spacious outdoor area.

Museums, Gardens and Experiences for Different Travel Days

For a day of science and interactive experiences, the UC Exploratório is located in Parque Verde do Mondego. The centre includes a planetarium with hemispheric 360-degree projection, is open daily and offers interactive activities with a strong focus on experimentation. Portugal dos Pequenitos is described as Portugal's first theme park. There, you can see miniature reproductions of Portuguese houses and national monuments. The Jardim Botânico is divided into the Jardim Clássico and the Mata. The Mata is an arboretum and occupies around two-thirds of the total area. The Jardins da Quinta das Lágrimas on the left bank of the Mondego offer a different landscape impression. The grounds cover 18.3 hectares; their wooded southern slope is suitable for long walks. Among the special features is a medieval garden described as the first in Portugal. For those interested in art and history, the bishop's palace, which houses the collections of the Museu Nacional de Machado de Castro, preserves a 12th-century cloister. The collection includes a representative body of Coimbra's sculptural production from the 14th to the 16th century, often made from Ançã stone. Beneath the museum are monumental, two-storey Roman galleries that presumably supported a large square or forum in the ancient city of Aeminium.

Events, Architecture and Regional Orientation

Coimbra also preserves vibrant student traditions. The Queima das Fitas takes place in May over eight days. In October, the Festa das Latas, also known as Latada, marks the beginning of the academic year at the Academia de Coimbra. It begins with a serenade at Largo da Sé Nova, musically accompanied by student Fado groups. The Centro de Portugal Pavilion was designed by Souto Moura and Álvaro Siza Vieira and is one of the pavilions with changing exhibitions. In the historic cafés of the Baixa, Pastéis de Santa Clara or Arrufadas are offered and enjoyed.
