Montemor-o-Velho: Discover the Castle, Waterways and Wetland

Montemor-o-Velho combines medieval castle walls, the Mondego river landscape and special experiences in nature. The historic centre is dominated by the Castle of Montemor-o-Velho. The oldest recognisable part of its military system dates from the Islamic 11th century. In the north of the municipality, Gândara features a rural landscape with potato cultivation, pastureland and pine forests. Paul do Taipal has a distinctly different character: the area is designated both as a Special Protection Area for birds and as a Special Area of Conservation within the Natura 2000 network, and since 2001 it has been a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

Paul do Taipal provides birds with a habitat for breeding, a winter refuge and a place to rest and feed during migration. For visitors, birdwatching is associated with restored and newly created observation points connected by a designated circular trail. Cycling and Water Activities

The Centro Náutico de Montemor-o-Velho has three waterways with a total of five kilometres of navigable water and holds the status of a Class A high-performance sports centre. Around 10 kilometres of cycle paths also run along the waterways. Family walks, cycling trips and outdoor jogging are possible there without prior booking.

The Parque Ribeirinho de Montemor-o-Velho covers around 78,000 square metres and is almost two kilometres long. It connects the historic centre with the riverbank and has a cycle path. The park also offers water activities with kayaks, stand-up paddleboards and hydrobikes.
