Discover Aveiro: Ria, Coast and Culture

Aveiro combines a waterscape, maritime history and Portuguese urban culture with a variety of destinations for active and culture-focused days of travel. The Ria de Aveiro is connected to Aveiro via the Canal das Pirâmides, the Canal de São Roque and the Canal dos Santos Mártires. Tourist trips on the canals are offered on Moliceiro boats. Fishing no longer has the same importance at Praia da Torreira as it once did, but it is associated with specialities such as eel in escabeche or as a stew.

In Murtosa, Praia do Bico is an easily accessible river and estuary beach with leisure facilities and services in the surrounding area. A boating experience at Cais do Bico there also includes collecting shellfish. These varied water experiences help with travel planning when a group wants to combine active days, regional cuisine and quieter observation.

Nature Trails and Distinctive Landscapes

The Arouca Geopark is a UNESCO-recognised geopark area with 41 geosites, including three of international importance. It has 13 short-distance hiking trails and one long-distance hiking trail. The Rota dos Geossítios leads to 31 geosites in the Arouca Geopark along three routes; some sections are intended to be travelled by car and others on foot. This makes it possible to include different forms of landscape exploration in the itinerary without making every day the same.

Other well-known nature experiences include the Passadiços do Paiva, an 8-kilometre-long riverside trail in the Município de Arouca, and the Ponte 516 Arouca. The suspension footbridge is 516 metres long, crosses the Paiva and is located 175 metres above the river. At Frecha da Mizarela, the Caima River plunges approximately 75 metres. In the Reserva Natural das Dunas de São Jacinto, the Trilho da Descoberta da Natureza enables visitors to observe and interpret the area’s natural values. These include observation points for fauna, an elevated walkway to the dune strip and information panels explaining biodiversity.

Maritime History, Art and Tradition

The Museu Marítimo de Ílhavo offers five permanent exhibitions on maritime themes. The Sala da Ria explores the agromaritime activities of the Ria de Aveiro. The museum also includes the Navio-Museu Santo André, which belonged to Portugal’s cod-fishing fleet and was built in the Netherlands in 1948. In August 2001, a new chapter began for the Santo André, in which it illustrates cod fishing with trawling nets and honours the memory of its crews.

The Museu de Aveiro is located in the former Convento de Jesus and displays paintings, sculptures, gilded woodcarvings, tiles, goldsmith’s work and textiles from the 14th to the 19th century. Aveiro also has an Art Nouveau route leading to buildings in this style. Near Ílhavo, the Vista-Alegre complex includes a porcelain factory, a museum and shops in an industrial setting on an arm of the Ria de Aveiro.

Distinctive cultural destinations can also be found outside the city. Castelo de Santa Maria da Feira is a Portuguese military monument with diverse defensive elements dating from the 11th to the 16th century. Its castle tower is intended as a cultural venue for conferences, performances, exhibitions and other events. The Festa das Fogaceiras takes place annually on 20 January and includes a procession in which girls carry Fogaças on their heads.
