Monte between the Walking Route and Local History
Accommodation in Monte
Monte combines a walking route through the town with a clearly dated church history and local festival traditions. The route leads from Pardelhas to the Freguesia do Monte; the church and chapel tell of a change in the place of worship. There are also examples of cultural and sporting events, a culinary recommendation and a seasonal cycling offer. This gives you different ways to get to know the area and decide which highlights suit your travel plans.
The Walking Route between Pardelhas and Monte
The Pardelhas–Monte walking route connects the centre of Murtosa, in the district of Pardelhas, with the Freguesia do Monte. In the Monte area, it runs through Parque da Saldida and then continues through the town centre. It also passes the Capela de Santa Luzia before continuing north to Arribação. This connection is useful for orientation in two ways: it shows both the relationship between Pardelhas and Monte and the route’s stops within Monte itself.
Church History along the Route
The Igreja Paroquial de Santo António do Monte was blessed on 28 August 1929 and inaugurated the following day. It replaced the Capela de Santo António as a place of worship; the chapel is now called Capela de Santa Luzia. The chapel had become too small for the growing number of worshippers. The two buildings are therefore part of a shared local history: the parish church took over as the place of worship, while the older chapel continues to play a role under its current name.
The dates are clear: the church’s inauguration followed its blessing the next day. The chapel also connects church history with the walking route, which passes the Capela de Santa Luzia. Anyone interested in Monte’s religious sites can thus relate the history of the former chapel to a specific point along the route.
Festival Traditions and Local Impressions
A report from July 2025 mentions an edition of “Semana do Catrazana” held from 9 to 16 June. It honoured the local population, the “Catrazanas”, and included religious celebrations for the patron saint Santo António, as well as cultural and sporting activities. The traditional Torneio de Malha also took place in Parque de Lazer da Arribação as part of the week. Arribação thus appears in two different contexts: as the northern destination of the walking route and in the name of the park where the tournament took place.
Another dated example is the Arraial dos Santos Populares at Casa das Pinheiras, which was open to the public in June 2026. The events show different sides of local cultural life: a programme with religious, cultural and sporting components, and a public festival at Casa das Pinheiras.
There is also a specific tip for your culinary plans: recommended experiences in Monte include Guedes’ “pastéis de nata”. This lets you add a culinary recommendation to your travel plans alongside the route and local history.
Seasonal Cycling Offer
In the municipality of Murtosa, the local council provides free bicycles for visits around the area during the summer, until early September. This seasonal offer may be relevant to your plans; check the current operating dates before travelling. The timing is therefore a factor in choosing when to visit, alongside the local and cultural attractions that make Monte special year-round.
