Gafanha Da Boa Hora offers several sides to a coastal holiday: dunes and nature shape the beach at Praia do Areão, while traditional fishing remains part of the scene at Praia da Vagueira. There are also waves and surfing conditions at Vagueira and Labrego, opportunities to observe nature along the Canal de Mira, and a distinctive church building. Which of these appeals to you most may also influence your choice of holiday apartment.

Beaches, Dunes and Nature Watching

The expansive Praia do Areão is set in a largely unspoilt natural environment. Its dune system retains its natural structure and vegetation. Boardwalks make it easier to reach the beach while also protecting the delicate plants from being trampled. If you would like to explore nature as well as the beach, the woodland next to Praia do Areão offers plenty to see on a walk: you may spot black kites, grey herons, foxes and otters, among other wildlife.

Along the Canal de Mira, the mudflats and tidal flats on its banks, together with the neighbouring agricultural fields, offer opportunities for birdwatching. Numerous bird species listed as priority species under the Birds Directive can be seen there; the area is part of the Natura 2000 ZPE Ria de Aveiro zone. Another way to take in the landscape is the Circuito Ambiental da Gafanha da Boa Hora: this project created walking loops between Praia do Areão, Praia da Vagueira and the Canal de Mira.

Waves, Fishing and Beach Days

The beaches each have their own character. The lively sea at Praia da Vagueira is suitable for surfing, and Praia do Labrego also offers good surfing conditions. There are surf schools near Labrego; if you are planning a lesson, check what is currently available in advance. This lets you weigh up a focus on surfing against other interests by the water without losing sight of the coast’s fishing tradition.

Traditional fishing is still practised at the expansive Praia da Vagueira. In the past, oxen hauled the nets laden with fish ashore; tractors now do the job. The catch from the traditional Arte Xávega fishing method is unloaded on the beach and sold very fresh at the fish stalls in the fish market opposite. If you would like to visit the market, it is a good idea to check what is currently available beforehand.

There is also a small water park near Praia do Labrego that is suitable for children. Check what is currently available in advance if this outing is important to your plans. The Parque Infantil da Praia da Vagueira is also open to tourists and occasional visitors; check its condition on site.

Church, Art and Local Events

The parish church of Gafanha Da Boa Hora combines post-conciliar modernist architecture, designed by architect Augusto dos Santos Malta, with a specific construction history: it was built in 1972 and inaugurated on 22 July 1984. Inside is a wooden 19th-century image of the Virgin Mary with the infant Jesus. There is also a polychrome terracotta image of Saint Thomas, created by Pedro Serrano, a potter from Aveiro.

Arte Xávega fishing can also be experienced on the beach and at the market: the catch is unloaded at Praia da Vagueira and sold at the fish market opposite. Another event held on a regular monthly schedule is the Feira dos Cinco, which takes place in Gafanha Da Boa Hora on the fifth day of each month. Check the exact date before your trip.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by deciding what matters most to you: waves and fishing, walks and wildlife watching, or architecture and local events. This way, you can choose where to stay based on your interests, without assuming that an accommodation has features for which no information is provided.
