Praia da Torreira lies on the strip of coast that separates the Ria de Aveiro from the sea. Dunes, water and traditional boatbuilding shape the themes you can explore here. There is more to it than a day at the beach: at Praia da Torreira, surfing conditions meet the calmer waters of the Ria, while a circular trail and events throughout the year offer further perspectives on the town.

Beaches between the open sea and the lagoon

Praia da Torreira is framed by a dune landscape. On the open-sea side, conditions are suitable for surfing; the calmer waters of the Ria de Aveiro at Praia da Torreira are suitable for sailing and windsurfing. When planning your time by the water, you can therefore choose between different activities: surfing on the open sea or sailing and windsurfing on the calmer lagoon.

Another beach option is Praia do Monte Branco, an estuary beach south of Torreira’s built-up area, on the EN 327. There is a picnic area there. Thanks to its peaceful setting and good accessibility, Praia do Monte Branco is particularly popular with families. These features give the beach its own character, so you can enjoy the two beaches in different ways.

A circular trail and traditional boats

The “Percurso Entre a Ria e o Mar” circular trail in Torreira is 9.3 kilometres long, rated easy, and takes about 1.5 to 2 hours. The Estaleiro-Museu da Praia do Monte Branco is suggested as the start and end point. The distance and approximate duration help you plan the walk as a separate activity; the suggested start and end point also links it to a place where traditional boatbuilding takes centre stage.

At the Estaleiro-Museu do Monte Branco, Mestre José Rito gives live demonstrations of the construction and repair of moliceiros and other traditional boats. The museum is a key venue for preserving this boatbuilding tradition. If you are interested in the craftsmanship behind the boats, you will find a different way to experience coastal culture here than on a beach visit: the focus is on working on the boats and passing on a traditional craft.

Festivities in September and a regatta in July

The Romaria de São Paio da Torreira takes place every year around 8 September. The festivities include moliceiro regattas and races featuring sailing bateiras. At night, groups of pilgrims known as rusgas walk through the streets of Torreira, carrying musical instruments. Water-based events and a nighttime local tradition come together in this way.

The Moliceiro Regatta of Ria de Aveiro Weekend is a separate event: it runs from Torreira to Aveiro in July. The distinction is useful when planning your visit: the regatta to Aveiro is part of the July weekend, while the Romaria takes place around 8 September and includes several festive traditions. Eel in escabeche and eel stew are characteristic dishes of the area, linked to the tradition of artisanal fishing at Praia da Torreira. This culinary connection adds another local perspective to the themes of water and boats.

Which aspects suit your trip?

When looking for a holiday apartment in Torreira, you can first consider which of these aspects of the town you would like to shape your holiday: time at the beach and watersports, an easy circular walk, a glimpse of boatbuilding, or the festivities with their regattas and rusgas. If you want a trip that combines culture and water, the boat museum and festive traditions offer concrete ways to explore them; if you would rather focus your stay on activities on the water, the open sea and the lagoon offer different options. Monte Branco beach also has its own appeal, with its dunes, picnic area and peaceful, family-friendly character.
