Sever Do Vouga: River Landscapes, Waterfalls and Cultural Heritage

River Landscapes, Waterfalls and Trails

One defining landscape feature is the free-flowing Vouga. It forms rapids, temporary islands, backwaters, beaches and pools. Its well-preserved riparian galleries support great biological diversity. Downstream from the bridge of Ponte de Pessegueiro, the river also has the status of a Site of Community Importance for the protection of migratory fish species.

Those wishing to combine water and trails will find several different options. The municipal Ecopista do Vouga follows the former section of the Vouga railway line along the Vouga River, from the mouth of the Rio Mau to the Cedrim stop. At the Rio Mau, in the municipality of Silva Escura, lies the Cabreia Waterfall, where water plunges over a rocky slope. A hiking trail leads to this waterfall and to recently restored mills.

Other water destinations also have their own distinctive features. Carrazedo Waterfall forms a small pond beside a series of mills and is considered an option for a family walk. Fílveda Waterfall plunges in several cascades over more than 40 metres; along approximately 200 metres of river, it overcomes a total elevation difference of 75 metres. At Gresso Waterfall, the Gresso Escarpment Walkway leads to a mountain stream that is a tributary of the Vouga. The trail runs through shady woodland with a dense riparian gallery.

For days on the water, the Couto de Esteves/Ribeiradio Reservoir is an appealing option. It extends for about 14 kilometres through scenic valleys and is suitable for canoeing. Praia Fluvial da Quinta do Barco is a bathing area with water quality rated as excellent.

Cultural Heritage Between the Serra and the Vouga

Sever Do Vouga and its surroundings also appeal to visitors seeking traces of history. The archaeological ruins of Castro de Cedrim, also known as Povoado de Castêlo, are located on a spur-shaped platform in the Serra das Talhadas. Remains of a cyclopean wall survive at the site. At Casa do Artesão, you can view and buy traditional handicrafts and regional products.

A notable structure is the Poço de S. Tiago Bridge. It is approximately 28.5 metres high, has 12 arches and was completed in 1913 for the new Vouga valley railway. The bridge offers a panorama of the Vouga River and its natural surroundings. The Via Romana da Ereira formed part of the route connecting Viseu with the Olisipo–Bracara Augusta road; an associated section of Roman road is approximately 230 metres long.

In the Serra do Arestal lies Anta da Cerqueira, also known as Anta da Pedra Moura. The approximately 5,000-year-old passage tomb is considered the best-preserved megalithic example in the area and is classified as a cultural asset of public interest. Further insights into early history are provided by a necropolis consisting of two dolmens and Forno dos Moiros, a rock with engravings whose origin probably dates back to the Bronze Age.

In the town centre, the Sever do Vouga pillory stands in the square in front of the old prison. It symbolises the municipal power established by the charter of municipal rights granted by King Manuel I in 1514. The Sever do Vouga Tourist Office provides a Joëlette free of charge upon request.
