Cedrim: Culture, Trails and Monte do Castêlo

Cedrim combines impressive cultural heritage with trails through a landscape steeped in history. Culture and history in Cedrim

A notable landmark is the Capela de Nossa Senhora dos Milagres, which bears the date 1692. The Igreja Paroquial de Cedrim is considered one of the finest examples of vernacular Baroque in the municipality of Sever do Vouga. Its façade features a cross with botanical finials and a niche containing a sculpture of Saint John. The Capela de Santo Amaro, a 17th-century building, is another cultural point of interest in the village.

The Cruzeiro Fontanário stands at Largo do Chafariz and is made of locally sourced granite. The square is also the starting and finishing point of the PR4 – Encosta do Castêlo route. Those interested in traditional buildings should also make a note of the Moinho Geraldo, which is recommended for a visit. It is estimated to be around 700 years old. In addition, the legend of the Mouras tells of an underground passage from Castêlo to the Rio Vouga, supposedly used by the Moors to take their horses to drink. The natural viewpoint on Monte do Castêlo is located at an altitude of 512 metres. From there, you can look out over the Médio Vouga valley and towards the parishes of Sever do Vouga and Pessegueiro do Vouga. Monte do Castêlo is also regarded as a site of considerable geomorphological interest with an extensive field of vision.

Travelling along the former Vouga railway line

Railway history also shapes Cedrim. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Vale do Vouga railway line led to the construction of a halt in Cedrim. The building of the Apeadeiro de Cedrim and the façade of its former goods shed have been preserved. A section of the former railway line has also been preserved as a monument at the Apeadeiro.

For a more active excursion, the approximately 11-kilometre-long Ecopista do Vouga is an option. The walking and cycling path follows the former Vale do Vouga railway line. At the former Apeadeiro de Cedrim, you can take a short break along the route. This allows you to explore Cedrim from a quieter, continuous perspective, while the PR4 is more strongly shaped by old connecting paths, village links and Monte do Castêlo.
