River trails, traces of cultural history, collections and regional cuisine offer different ways to explore Águeda. When planning your trip, you can consider whether you would rather focus on landscapes and outdoor activities, museums and traditions, or a combination of these. The specific routes, cultural sites and events offer a range of options.

River trails and Pateira de Fermentelos

The PR 11 – Trilho do Vale Serrano starts and ends at the Igreja de Santa Maria Madalena in Agadão. Along the way, it passes the Agadão River and a small waterfall; it also crosses farmland and woodland. Water, cultivated landscapes and woodland all contribute to the character of this route.

The Trilho do Rio Águeda follows a different course: it connects Águeda city centre with Pateira de Fermentelos and runs along the banks of the Águeda River. Along the route are the former Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho, farmland and river floodplains. The routes therefore differ in their orientation: the PR 11 is defined by its starting and ending point at the church in Agadão, while the Trilho do Rio connects the city centre with Pateira.

Pateira de Fermentelos is located close to Águeda. Its landscape features calm waters and a rich variety of flora and fauna. It is considered the largest natural lagoon on the Iberian Peninsula. In Parque de Alta Vila, a continuous footpath connects the lower and upper areas.

History, collections and traditions

The settlement of Cabeço do Vouga was established during the Iron Age and used again in Roman times. The Casa Museu do Cancioneiro de Águeda is housed in a restored 18th-century manor house. Its exhibits include traditional costumes, household and agricultural items, furniture from the Alta Vila house, cloths and quilts, as well as the Cancioneiro collections.

The collection at Museu da Fundação includes paintings, sculpture, furniture, ceramics, ivory and silver from the 17th to the 20th century. The museum has six permanent exhibition rooms and one room for temporary exhibitions; the exhibition layout may change. Another cultural stop is Igreja de Santa Eulália: Santa Eulália is the patron saint of the city of Águeda, and the church has a richly furnished interior with Renaissance sculptures.

Macieira de Alcôba also offers an experience that combines culture and learning. Centro Interpretativo do Milho Antigo offers playful educational activities about native maize for all age groups. Those interested in railway history can reach Museu do Caminho de Ferro de Macinhata do Vouga by train on the Vouga line. This is Portugal’s only narrow-gauge railway branch still in operation. Check the timetable before your trip.

Water sports, cycling and events

Centro de Atividades Náuticas Bério Marques offers the public opportunities for informal water sports, particularly for learning or taking up a sport. It also allows people to use the Águeda River and Braço do Rio on a free-access basis. This is a different way to enjoy the area from the trails through woodland, farmland and river floodplains.

Águeda Bike Park features a network of mountain bike trails developed according to the International Mountain Bicycling Association Europe guidelines for sustainable trails. One trail can also be ridden on an adapted bicycle. The facilities are generally intended for public use; access may change on competition days and public holidays, in bad weather or during maintenance work. Check access conditions before visiting.

Semana do Teatro is a regular theatre initiative and is usually held at Centro de Artes de Águeda. The AgitÁgueda festival takes place every July in the city centre by the river; check the specific event dates when planning your trip. During Romaria das Almas Santas da Areosa, farmers traditionally drive decorated ox carts three times around the chapel.

Posto de Turismo de Águeda is listed as one of the facilities in Águeda that is accessible to people with special needs. If this is important for your visit, confirm the conditions in advance.

Regional cuisine and choosing your base

Traditional Águeda cuisine includes leitão assado, rojões, lampantana with mutton or goat meat, coelho à moda de Águeda and several bacalhau dishes, including à Lagareiro, albardado and à Ribeirinho. The sweets also have their own names: they include fuzis, sequilhos, bolo de Páscoa, barrigas de freira and pastéis de Águeda.

When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home, it helps to first decide what kind of trip you want. If you mainly want to explore river trails and landscapes, the routes and Pateira are the main attractions; if you are more interested in history, collections and traditions, the museums, church and events offer other points of reference.
