Vagos between the Atlantic Coast, Ria and Hiking Trails

Vagos combines the Atlantic coast, woodland and Ria landscapes with extensive sandy beaches. Depending on whether you would prefer to spend your holiday by the water, on hiking trails or among mills, pilgrimage sites and regional traditions, different priorities emerge for planning your trip and choosing a suitable holiday apartment.

Beaches, Dunes and Water Sports

Praia da Vagueira is a wide sandy beach closely associated with traditional fishing. Praia do Areão, by contrast, offers a largely undeveloped beach surrounded by dunes. The adjacent Mata provides opportunities for walks and wildlife observation. Those who want to experience this landscape at a relaxed pace can use the dune and woodland surroundings as a guide when choosing the desired location of their accommodation.

Praia do Labrego offers good conditions for surfing; there is also a small water park nearby. At the marina of Praia da Vagueira, a sandy beach accessible via a ramp is suitable for canoeing, stand-up paddleboarding, sailing and rowing. MIGAS SURF SCHOOL is certified by the Federação Portuguesa de Surf and offers lessons or training in surfing, bodysurfing, bodyboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and skating. For travellers with their own boat, the marina has 14 berths for boats up to 20 metres long and with a draught of less than 2.5 metres.

The connection with the surrounding area is also reflected in the local cuisine: caldeirada de enguias is considered an emblematic dish of Vagos and the surrounding area. A holiday in a holiday apartment can therefore be combined with days at the beach, water sports and regional cuisine, without limiting the stay to just one type of excursion.

Hiking Trails through Woodlands, River Landscapes and Mill Areas

For shorter days of hiking, the PR4 – Trilho das Levadas das Azenhas do Boco is a good option. The 4 km circular trail follows the levadas of Boco and passes mills and watermills. Its diverse native vegetation includes alders, ash trees, laurels and oaks, among others. Birds and wetland wildlife include, for example, goshawks, sparrowhawks, nightjars, purple herons, western marsh harriers and little terns. The circular route can begin at Capela do Boco or Parque de Merendas do Boco.

The PR3 – Percurso Natura Rio Boco is a 6.3 km linear hiking trail. It lies within the Special Protection Area and Special Area of Conservation of the Ria de Aveiro in the Natura 2000 network. The route follows the Rio Boco, crosses Parque Municipal Quinta do Ega and uses the Fareja footbridge to cross the river.

A longer day of hiking follows the PR2 VGS – Trilho de São Martinho. The approximately 19 km circular trail uses woodland and agricultural paths, passes the sparkling-wine vineyards of Quinta da Pedreira and ends at Parque das Azenhas. There, visitors can learn how historic watermills function. In addition, the PR1 – Trilho da Lontra runs for 8.3 km in the area of Lagoa do Moitão and Lagoa da Jincosa.

Mills, Pilgrimage Sites and Waterways

Vagos has a strong milling tradition. Azenha da Fonte is one of two watermills in Boco that are still in operation. At Azenha Ti Luísa, the process of grinding flour is explained and demonstrated. Azenha Barreto preserves a historic interior with grinding equipment, a miller's room and a kitchen. Moinho de Vento de Santo António de Vagos is a rotatable wooden windmill of the Gandara type and one of the few windmills still in operation in the Aveiro District. Moinhos de Vento de São Romão bear witness to the historic relationship of the Vagos community with grain milling and rice husking.

Santuário de Nossa Senhora de Vagos dates back to the early period of Portuguese nationhood, was remodelled in the 19th century and preserves elements from the 17th century. Processions and pilgrimages take place there on Whit Monday. Igreja Paroquial de São Tiago de Vagos also has a long history: by 1220 at the latest, it was dedicated to the apostle James and stood on the coastal pilgrimage route to Compostela.

The Ria de Aveiro can be experienced on the water during a Moliceiro boat trip with “Os Violas”. The trip passes through the Special Protection Area and Special Area of Conservation of the Ria de Aveiro in the Natura 2000 network. The Moliceiro boat also travels along the Rio Boco and docks at Ponte de Fareja. Moinho Giratório de Vento Ti Pascoal is located at Lagoa de Calvão. There are two picnic areas, a short walking path around the lagoon and a bridge for observing nature. As part of the Festival dos Moinhos de Portugal, a family event for observing flora and fauna takes place there.

Traditions and Practical Information

The Festival do Moliceiro has been held in Vagos since 1984. The programme includes a procession of traditional Moliceiro boats on the Rio Boco and a re-enactment of the traditional auction of moliço and reeds. Vagos is also home to the production of ceramics, basketware, mats and miniature mills according to traditional crafts. Museu do Brincar invites visitors to experience an exhibition and interact with the museum space.
