Kordel: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Kordel lies in a narrow basin in the lower Kyll Valley, formed by the Kyll and the Welschbilliger and Kimmlinger streams.
Nature
At Kordel’s eastern edge, the naturally preserved riverbed of the Kyll curves around the Vogelskopf. The steep, predominantly wooded valley slopes expose Upper Buntsandstein, overlain by shell sandstone.
Culture
Kordel’s archaeological heritage dates back to the Late Paleolithic and includes the Genoveva Cave as well as ramparts on the heights of the Kyll Valley. The Genoveva Cave contains finds ranging from the Paleolithic through the Roman and medieval periods to modern times. The cave is about 15 metres wide, and its ceiling is approximately 8 to 10 metres above the ground.
Parts of the Roman Long Wall are located within the municipality of Kordel. The present parish church was built in 1865–67 as a neo-Gothic hall church made of greyish-yellow sandstone. Ramstein Castle is a Gothic ruin on a sandstone cliff in the Kyll Valley near Kordel. The geological exposures and the quality of Voltzia sandstone led to the development of the sandstone industry in Kordel from 1870 onwards.
The Hochmark Plateau is popular with hikers, and the local restaurants are a popular destination. The Hochmark is also home to a reconstructed glass furnace considered worth seeing.
Cycling
The Kyll Cycle Path runs 121.4 kilometres from Losheimergraben to Trier and is classified as moderately difficult. The Kyll Cycle Path passes through Kordel and continues along the Kyll to Trier.
Leisure
Kylltalbad is an open-air swimming facility in the Kyll Valley with extensive lawns and four pools. Kylltalbad has a slackline, beach volleyball, basketball and table tennis facilities. The non-swimmer pool has a long slide, play equipment and a water fountain.
