Kahren combines rare school architecture with sweeping landscape views and local discoveries. The former schoolhouse tells the story of the construction of one-class schools; the Hosteturm tower offers panoramic views across the Saargau and Hochwald regions, reaching as far as Luxembourg and France. A circular trail brings local history to life, while a walking path popular with residents of the district offers views of Saarburg and the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. This gives you a choice of different focuses, from architectural heritage and finding your way around the village to scenery and what the Saargauhof has to offer.

A Schoolhouse with a Rare Architectural History

The former schoolhouse in Kahren was built around 1850 in the chapel style. It is one of the very few surviving examples of Prussian model buildings for one-class schools. The term “chapel style” describes its architectural classification, while “one-class” refers to the type of school. The interior layout has also been preserved: an entrance hall, a teacher’s room and a three-bay classroom. This sequence of rooms complements the description of the style with the schoolhouse’s specific layout and makes its historical use easy to understand. The architecture and former function can be seen together here, rather than the focus being solely on the exterior.

Kahren’s Historic Buildings

Other cultural heritage sites also reveal different aspects of Kahren’s architectural history. The Catholic branch church of St. Matthias is a Neo-Gothic hall church with a Gothic core and additions dating from 1733, 1852 and 1913. These dates provide several points of reference in the building’s history; the Gothic core and Neo-Gothic hall church also offer different architectural accents from the former schoolhouse. A village fountain dating from the 19th century adds another element to the local cultural heritage. Southeast of the village, on the road to Trassem, stands a niche chapel dating from 1874. Together, the church, fountain and chapel represent different forms and historical periods.

Walks with Local History and Views

A circular trail equipped with information boards connects places of tourist interest in Kahren. The boards provide historical and local information, so the trail is about both the stops and the context behind them. A walking path popular with residents of the district offers lovely views of Saarburg and the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. This gives you specific themes to consider: historical and local information, as well as views of the town and nature park. The named viewpoints and the information along the circular trail offer different clues as to what might interest you most on a walk.

Sweeping Panoramas from the Hosteturm

The Hosteturm viewpoint stands on the 435 m-high Hosteberg in Kahren. The mountain is considered the highest elevation between the Saar and the Upper Moselle. From the viewpoint, panoramic vistas stretch across the Saargau and Hochwald regions and as far as Luxembourg and France. This brings additional, specifically named destinations into focus alongside the views of Saarburg and the nature park offered by the walking path. The Hosteturm opens up a perspective across landscapes and countries, while the other viewpoints look towards the town of Saarburg and the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. The viewpoint is freely accessible.

Visits to the Saargauhof by Arrangement

The Saargauhof in Saarburg-Kahren offers another way to combine a visit with a particular interest. Farm visits are available by arrangement; please check in advance, as the arrangements may change. The farm also sells ice cream made on site, with around 10 to 15 different varieties. This offering may also change. When planning, keep in mind the distinction: a farm visit requires an advance enquiry, while the selection of ice cream may vary. The Saargauhof thus complements Kahren’s architectural and landscape attractions with an offering centred on homemade ice cream.
