Culture
A temple district was built on the Metzenberg near the Roman road at the beginning of the first century. It is assumed that Tawern originated around the time of Christ’s birth as a station on the Roman road from Trier to Metz.
During the first construction phase, five small temples stood side by side. The Roman temple complex was reconstructed between 1986 and 1999. The largest temple contained a slightly larger-than-life-size statue of Mercury. The upper terrace features a reconstructed Gallo-Roman ambulatory temple and an adjacent chapel. The complex conveys an impression of the religious beliefs of antiquity.
Landscape
Tawern lies between the Moselle and Saar rivers in a broad valley that opens to the northeast towards Trier and the Moselle valley. The landscape around Tawern includes Hardwald, Pflauberg, Metzenberg, Röhlert, Orschenberg, Lück and Rosenberg.
The tower room of St. Peter and Paul contains a pilgrim stamp for the Way of St. James.
Getting around
The reconstructed Roman temple complex stands in a forest above the Vicus Tabernae and is located on hiking trail G11. A forest car park is available for visitors; from there, the temple complex is approximately a 15-minute walk away. It is freely accessible and can be visited at any time.

The Roman Tour explores the street settlement of the Vicus and the temple complex on the Metzenberg. It offers views towards Trier and access to historical excavations at the temple complex. The tour leads through the Mannebach valley and as far as the Talbachhütte.
The Römertempel trekking site has wooden platforms for one or two tents, a rest area and a composting toilet. Bus connections to and from Tawern are available; further information can be obtained from the Verkehrsverbund Region Trier (VRT).
