Celle combines a half-timbered old town, art and a range of ways to explore the surrounding area. The city centre has almost 500 half-timbered houses, alongside routes through heathland and river landscapes, and cultural sites with their own unique histories. Half-timbered houses, the old town and art in Celle
A walk through Celle’s old town combines historic architecture with a clearly defined route: the very easy 3.22-kilometre route leads from Celle Castle to the synagogue, now regarded as the oldest largely preserved half-timbered synagogue in Lower Saxony. A guided tour for individual visitors also takes you through the old town, with the castle, the city’s history and Celle’s half-timbered architecture among the topics. No advance booking is required.
The Celle Art Museum also offers a distinctive experience. By day, its indoor galleries display paintings, prints, sculpture, light art and object art. At night, the museum is closed, while light art shines outward from the glass façade and behind it. Celle Castle Park is considered both a historic landmark and a living testament to nature. The city therefore offers varied impressions, from a walk among half-timbered houses to art indoors and the effects of light on the façade.
Cycling and hiking routes through the landscape
The Südheide Nature Park has ten signposted themed cycling routes covering more than 400 kilometres in total. They lead to special sights and through heathland, forests, heath streams, and moor and pond landscapes. The hiking options include 23 themed hiking trails, five nature trails and three long-distance hiking trails. The choices therefore range from themed routes and nature trails to longer hiking routes.
One of the most scenic sections of another cycling route runs through Wietze and past the Hornbosteler Hutweide nature reserve, across wide river meadows: the Aller Cycle Route. Canoeing is subject to a different, seasonal restriction. On the heath streams in the district of Celle, it is permitted only with restrictions each year from 16 May to 14 October; check local restrictions and water levels before setting off. These differences can help with planning: cycling and hiking routes offer a range of route formats, while paddling is subject to a set period and local conditions.
Monastery, local history and special collections
The former Cistercian monastery in Wienhausen is regarded as an example of North German Brick Gothic and half-timbered architecture. Its medieval art treasures include tapestries from the 14th and 15th centuries, a painted nuns’ choir, valuable chests and cabinets, and a collection of the world’s oldest spectacles. The “Hiking around Wienhausen” tour passes through the historic village centre with its half-timbered houses, goes by St Mary’s Church and ends at the monastery, which welcomes visitors from April to October.
The Gothic tapestries are traditionally explained by experts for one week each year, starting on the Saturday after Pentecost. As these dates are important for travel planning, it is advisable to check them before your trip. The monastery and village walk thus offer two different ways to explore the area: the monastery’s architectural and art history, and a route through the historic village centre.
Wietze: technology, chapel and garden knowledge
At the German Petroleum Museum in Wietze, visitors can explore part of the historic Wietze oil field, with numerous original technical artefacts that are still operational. A different architectural impression awaits at the Baroque Stechinelli Chapel in the south of Wietze, considered a worthwhile detour for its splendid interior. The town thus brings together two very different themes: technical artefacts from the history of the oil industry and Baroque architecture.
In Celle, the medicinal herb garden is located near the city centre, by the Dammaschwiesen meadows and the River Aller. A guided tour introduces the uses and history of selected medicinal plants, with a focus on their use in traditional medicine, including homeopathy and modern phytotherapy. Those interested in this perspective on plants will find a different subject here from that offered by the art and history sites.
