Adelheidsdorf is closely connected with the history of the former Großes or Müggenburger Moor. The Adelheidsdorf cycling loop leads through fields, meadows and pastures. Numerous watercourses characterise the route, while horses can often be seen grazing along the way.

Landscape

The local settlements developed through the cultivation of the former Großes or Müggenburger Moor. The former moorland stretched from Celle to Ramlingen. Birch trees and rowan trees characterise the landscape of the former moorland.

Peat extraction flourished in the area in the early 18th century. Drainage ditches along the cycle route show how the former moorland was drained. At the same time, they support characteristic animal and plant life.

History

The settlement from which Adelheidsdorf emerged developed from 1824 onwards between Müggenburg and the Fuhse Canal. Adelheidsdorf was established as a colony between 1824 and 1838 along the Hanover–Celle road. In 1831, the village was named Adelheidsdorf in honour of Queen Adelaide of England and Hanover.

The former Müggenburg estate was a place where the Dukes of Celle collected tolls. The history of the moorland, its cultivation and the development of the settlement thus remains linked to several specific places and periods.

On the Way

Großmoor is the starting and finishing point of the Adelheidsdorf cycling loop. The route offers a GPS navigation download. The traditional training centre for riding horses is located directly on the cycle route. The local landscape can also be explored on horseback; Adelheidsdorf has had a stallion testing centre since 1927.

A peat extraction station explains the work involved in cutting peat. The peat extraction exhibit explains how the land was made suitable for use as arable and meadowland. In Großmoor, a farm shop with regional products invites visitors to stop.
