Culture and History
Wienhausen Monastery was founded in 1225. The first reliable documentary mention of the monastery dates back to 1233. A Protestant women's convent continues to operate at the monastery.
The monastery preserves an extensive collection of medieval Christian artworks. The Textile and Carpet Museum displays large-scale Gothic embroideries; individual audio tours guide visitors through its exhibition of Gothic tapestries.
Wienhausen's historical heritage also includes St. Mary's Church, dating from the 11th century, and a freestanding wooden bell tower with half-timbering and a clock on one side, which defines the character of the townscape. The old grain mill now houses an artists' studio and a workshop.
Nature and Trails
The Aller Cycle Route passes through Wienhausen between Celle and Langlingen. Near Wienhausen, it runs close to the Aller.
A 2.3-kilometre path through the monastery park leads to the Aller embankment and viewpoints overlooking the Aller floodplains. The Wienhausen Mill Canal branches off from the Aller near Langlingen and flows back into the river north of Wienhausen. It supplied the mills and the monastery with water.
A hiking trail in Wienhausen passes the former irrigation meadows. Small canals once carried water across the meadows there.
