The Hunäus borehole is considered one of the world’s first successful oil wells. The open-air grounds of the German Oil Museum are home to original drilling and production equipment. Many of the original drilling and production installations can still be put into operation. The 54-metre-high Tower 70 on the museum grounds is a landmark of Wietze.

At the rest area on the Aller Cycle Path at the mouth of the Wietze stands a wooden model of Wietze’s oil derrick; there is also a covered area where visitors can take a break. The rest area offers views of the Aller, the Wietze and the adjacent meadow landscape.
By car, the museum can be reached from the Schwarmstedt exit of the A7 via the B214 in about ten minutes. From Celle, bus route 800 takes around 40 minutes to reach Wietze; the museum is then approximately a 15-minute walk away.
The museum is located along several tourist cycle and themed routes, including the Aller Cycle Path, Kaliroute, Postmeister Route and Hanover Cultural Route. The Aller Cycle Path runs through the river landscape around Wietze.
Allerhorn offers canoe and kayak rental by the hour or day for exploring the Aller. In the surrounding region, visitors can try guided gold panning at Lower Saxony’s only gold-panning camp.
