Discover Müden: Heathland, the Örtze River and History
Accommodation in Müden
Müden amid heathland, the Örtze River and history
Müden combines nature experiences along the Örtze River with heathland, water and a remarkable local history. If you are looking for a mix of walks, nature observation and historical discoveries for your holiday, you can combine different ideas for each day here. The surrounding area combines short explorations with longer routes and special experiences, allowing you to put together a variety of day plans.
Experience water and nature mindfully
Lake Heidesee has become an important habitat for many plants and animals, including dragonflies. Swimming is not permitted in Lake Heidesee. Instead, you can walk around the lake on a route of approximately 2.5 km and discover its flora and fauna. The approximate distance helps you fit this circular walk appropriately into your day’s plans.
The Örtze River also offers a special perspective on the landscape. Canoeing downstream is permitted on a restricted basis exclusively from the mill in Müden, annually from May 16 to October 14, from 09:00 to 18:00, using canoes, Canadian canoes or kayaks. Anyone looking for an experience with birds of prey will find the “Falconer for a Day” experience package at Müden Wildlife Park. It includes observing birds of prey at close range, flight training and taking part in a flight demonstration.
Hiking with different points of focus
The 12.5 km Müden Heathland Loop begins and ends at the historic watermill. Along its route, it connects Lake Heidesee, the riverside landscapes of the Örtze and Wietze, Wietzer Berg, the Heidschnuckenweg trail, St. Lawrence Church and the half-timbered houses in the town center. This makes it possible to plan a longer hike combining landscape and local sights.
For a different kind of exploration, the River-Forest Adventure Trail begins in Müden. It follows forest tracks and picturesque paths along the Örtze River, with interactive information boards along the way. The Müden (Örtze) Audio Walk brings Müden’s 1,000-year history to life as you walk through the town. You can therefore choose between a longer loop, a route along the river and a history-focused walk.
Historic sites in the townscape
The historic watermill in Müden (Örtze) was built between 1435 and 1438 in the style of a Lower Saxon farmhouse. Following renovations from 1989 to 1997, the historic building now houses the Tourist Information Office, a library, a wedding room and exhibition spaces. There is also a herb garden and an orchard meadow at the watermill.
You can find further traces of the past in the old “Kösterschule,” built in 1606. An outbuilding of the Rosien/Kohlmeyer farm on Schulstraße still contains almost the complete equipment of the old wheelwright’s workshop. The cemetery also features a 200-year-old staircase granary that was relocated from Schmarbeck to Müden (Örtze). It houses an exhibition on Müden’s cultural landscape and church history.
