Langlingen can be explored through two specific themes: the Aller Cycle Route, which runs through the town, and its local history, brought to life at St. John’s Church and the village museum. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can consider whether you would like to focus your stay more on cycling or on exploring local history.

Cycling route and local history in Langlingen

St. John’s Church in Langlingen was built in 1335. The local history village museum is located on the former Grethenhof estate, in an old granary built in 1722. A 14th-century church and an early 18th-century granary thus offer two distinct historical points of interest.

On the village museum’s activity days, historical tasks are demonstrated, including washing clothes as in the past and churning butter in a barrel. If you would like to include a demonstration in your plans, check the activity day dates before your trip.

Outdoor activities in the wider destination of Celle

In the wider destination of Celle, the themed cycling routes in Südheide Nature Park offer another way to explore: ten signposted routes cover a total of more than 400 kilometres. They lead to special sights and through heathland, forests, heathland streams, and moor and pond landscapes. The distinction is clear: the Aller Cycle Route runs through Langlingen, while the signposted themed routes in Südheide Nature Park take in a variety of landscapes and sights.

For hiking, the nature park has 23 themed walking trails, five discovery trails, and three long-distance hiking trails. Canoeing on the heathland streams in the district of Celle is permitted with restrictions each year from 16 May to 14 October. Check local restrictions and water levels before setting off.

Half-timbered architecture and culture in Celle

The cultural attractions in the wider destination of Celle also offer a variety of experiences. There are almost 500 half-timbered houses in Celle’s town centre. A very easy 3.22-kilometre walk leads through Celle’s old town from the Ducal Palace of Celle to the synagogue. On a guided city tour for individual visitors, you can learn about Celle Castle, the town’s history, and its more than 480 half-timbered houses; advance booking is not required.

Wienhausen Monastery adds medieval art and architectural history to this picture. The former Cistercian monastery is considered an example of North German Brick Gothic and half-timbered architecture. Its art treasures include tapestries from the 14th and 15th centuries, a painted nuns’ choir, valuable chests and cabinets, and a collection of the world’s oldest spectacles. The Gothic tapestries are explained by experts for one week each year, traditionally starting on the Saturday after Pentecost. Check the dates before including this tour in your travel plans.
