Designated areas include Pelouses, rochers et buxaie de la Pointe de Givet, a 673-hectare Zone Spéciale de Conservation focusing on dry calcareous grasslands. The Vallée boisée de la Houille is a 237-hectare Zone Spéciale de Conservation recognised for its ravine forests. Tourbières du plateau ardennais comprises a 361-hectare Zone Spéciale de Conservation in the Ardennes focusing on peatlands.

Ardoisières de Monthermé et de Deville is a Zone Spéciale de Conservation whose old mines and underground galleries are home to nine bat species. Plateau Ardennais is a 75,665-hectare Zone de Protection Spéciale in the Ardennes designated for birds. As a classified site, Roc la Tour features quartzite columns and a panorama over the Semoy Valley.

Getting around

The Parc naturel régional des Ardennes can be reached by train from Paris in less than two hours. It can also be reached by bus, carpool, bicycle or on foot. The Ardennes waterways make it possible to get around on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by boat.

The Voie Verte Sud-Ardennes is a 110 km route along the water. At Pont-à-Bar, it connects with EuroVelo 19, La Meuse à vélo. The Voie Verte Sud-Ardennes follows the Canal des Ardennes and is open to pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders and scooter riders. The Parc naturel régional des Ardennes also has 22 signposted mountain-bike circuits totalling more than 400 km across four levels of difficulty.

Culture

Les Rochers des Quatre Fils Aymon are associated with the medieval epic of the four sons of Aymon. Place Ducale forms the historic centre of Charleville-Mézières and is a listed historic monument. It was built between 1606 and 1624 from yellow stone, blue slate and red brick.

Rocroi is one of the few European towns whose star-shaped layout has been completely preserved. The Église Saint-Didier d’Asfeld is a Baroque church in the shape of a violin.
