Strážný: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Strážný tells its story directly through the landscape. On Obecní vrch south of Strážný lies an almost one-kilometre-long system of remains of the Vimperk branch of the Zlatá stezka, which is among the best-preserved remnants of this historic route. The Strážný settlement enclave developed along this branch near the border with Germany.

Geographical Setting

The border of Šumava National Park runs through the Strážný settlement enclave. Its northeastern part lies outside the park.

History and Culture

The past is also visible in a structure at the Weiher pond: the earth embankment was built by Petr Malovec between 1543 and 1547. It is considered the oldest earth embankment dam in Central Europe and dates from the 15th to the 16th century.

The ruins of Kunžvart Castle lie about 1.5 km from the municipality of Strážný, on the eastern spur of Strážný mountain. At an elevation of 1,033 m, Kunžvart is one of the highest-altitude castles in the Czech Republic. The royal guard castle was built near the national border to protect the Zlatá stezka.

A yellow-marked hiking trail leads from the ruins of Kunžvart Castle to the former Orlova Huť and to a lookout point dedicated to Václav Hrubý. Northwest of Strážný, above the town, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary, dating from 1834, also stands on Kamenný vrch.

Experiences

The Skiareál Strážný ski resort has three drag lifts right in Strážný. The resort offers groomed downhill slopes with artificial snowmaking as well as groomed cross-country skiing trails. The Šumava Magistrale cross-country ski route also runs through Strážný; it connects Železná Ruda with Zadní Zvonková.
