Holiday apartment in Fortuna: thermal baths, Roman history and Sierra de la Pila

The Balneario de Leana is considered one of Spain’s oldest thermal spas and dates back to the late 19th century. Its thermal pools have a water surface of 600 square metres and a sandy bottom. The spa also offers hydromassage pools, a bubbling volcano, aromatherapy showers and an experiential steam room.

Culture

About 3 kilometres from Fortuna lies the Cueva Negra, a group of three rock overhangs in the Sierra del Baño that served as a Roman sanctuary. Among the outstanding features of this ancient Roman sanctuary are a temple dedicated to a divine triad and a basin carved into the rock in which thermal water was collected. More than one hundred Hispano-Latin inscriptions, known as tituli picti, can be found on the walls of the Cueva Negra; most of them are fragments of verse from Virgil’s Aeneid.

The town itself also contains various traces of history and regional everyday life. The rehearsal venue of Coros y Danzas La Purísima serves as an ethnographic museum with an exhibition on local traditions and former ways of life. The exhibits include household objects, furniture, traditional costumes and trousseau from Fortuna. The town hall is a modernist building with a portal featuring Mozarabic characteristics and decorative modernist oil paintings by José María Medina Noguera from 1907. The technique known as panneaus is considered unique in the region. The Iglesia Parroquial de la Purísima Concepción dates from the 18th century and is designed in the Murcian Baroque style.

Nature

The Sierra de la Pila Regional Park extends across the municipalities of Abarán, Blanca, Fortuna and Molina de Segura in the Region of Murcia. In the regional park, visitors can hike or cycle along paths and forest tracks, as well as climb to the peaks of La Pila and Los Cenajos to enjoy panoramic views. The regional park has recreational areas, a camping area, viewpoints, hiking trails and an accessible path.

Throughout the municipality of Fortuna, there are signposted nature trails that can be explored on foot. In addition, six PR-MU hiking trails are designated: PR-MU 125 Sendero del cordel de Los Valencianos, PR-MU 126 Sendero de La Garapacha al pico de La Pila, PR-MU 127 Sendero de la umbría de La Pila, PR-MU 128 Sendero de Peña Zafra de Arriba, PR-MU 129 Sendero de la sierra del Corqué and PR-MU 130 Sendero de la sierra de Lúgar.

Cortao de las Peñas is known for its landscape and geology, as well as for its panoramic views.

Activities

Another local attraction is the Circuito Motorsport. The sports facility is intended for various types of training and competitions, including Minivelocidad, Pitbike and Supermotard karts. Private group events, kart rentals with 270-4T karts and a driving centre operated by KSB Sport are also offered.
