Holiday apartment in Ricote: Historic Town Center and Nature

Ricote combines a medieval town center with distinctive landscapes, historic buildings and designated trails. The historic town center preserves its medieval origins and layout, with narrow, irregular streets. These streets are lined with evidence of different eras, including the Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián, which has been classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural (B.I.C.) since 1981.

Culture and History

At the Palacio de Llamas, a simple Baroque style meets French influence. Francisco de Llamas Abenza had the palace built in 1702. Inside, a grand imperial staircase leads beneath a dome supported by pendentives and decorated with paintings of Moorish figures. The Iglesia Parroquial de San Sebastián also houses the historic Baroque organ Órgano de los Llamas, built in 1743.

Another historical landmark is the Castillo de Ricote. It is located in the Sierra del Salitre at an elevation of around 442 meters on the right bank of the small Estrecho del Solvente canyon, formed by the Río Segura. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de las Huertas also brings together different layers of history: during the Mudéjar period, it was a mosque. Its ruins preserve a horseshoe arch in the Andalusian tradition.

Landscape and Nature

The municipality of Ricote includes dry ravines, ramblas and mountains covered by dense forest. The town of Ricote lies between irrigated orchards and the limestone of its Sierra. It is also surrounded by extensive, well-preserved natural areas that invite visitors to observe fauna and flora depending on the season. Thus, dry and forested landscapes stand alongside irrigated orchards and the limestone of the Sierra.

Trails and Activities

Ricote’s forest areas offer suitable conditions for hiking. From Ricote, there are circular routes that can be explored on foot or by bicycle using brochures. In addition, the Ruta de la Huerta de Ricote – Jardín de al-Ándalus is designated as a local hiking trail marked SL-MU 31; its signage extends over 5.2 kilometers.

Ricote also has a dense network of trails and forest tracks suitable for mountain biking. The limestone walls feature numerous fully equipped sport climbing routes with varying technical levels of difficulty. Accordingly, the activities described include both signposted trails and circular routes presented in brochures, forest routes, forest tracks and climbing routes with varying levels of challenge.

Cuisine, Wine and Festivals

Ricote’s cuisine includes, among other dishes, Potaje de habichuelas, Gachasmigas ruleras and Cocido con pelotas. The local wines are characterized by a high alcohol content, artisanal production and limited marketing. These culinary specialties are accompanied by local festivals: the patron saint festivals in honor of Saint Sebastián are celebrated in Ricote at the end of January.

At the Ermita de la Virgen del Oro, a Romería takes place on August 15, the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. It adds an event to the festival calendar that is linked to a specific location and the religious holiday.
