Holiday apartment in Aljucer – culture, waterways and festivals

The Iglesia Parroquial de Nuestra Señora de los Dolores is a Baroque church built in the 18th century and restored in 1990. This is where the cultural exploration of Aljucer begins, at a building whose present-day appearance preserves various historical layers.

Culture and history

Parts of the former Las Clarisas de Santa Verónica altarpiece are preserved on the church's high altar. The structure of this altarpiece dates from the 17th century and was restored in the 1940s. Another link to art history is Juan González Moreno: the sculptor was born in the Aljucer district in 1908 and received the “Madrigal” Prize from the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in 1936.

The Torre de los Alburquerques is one of Aljucer's most important sights and has been designated a Bien de Interés Cultural by the city of Murcia. The Puente Grande, or Puente de Aljucer, also reflects the area's architectural history. It lies beneath the Carretera del Palmar; the 18th-century bridge was built from large stone blocks to cross the Acequia de Alguazas.

The settlement in Aljucer grew gradually in connection with a bridge over the Acequia Alquibla on the main road from Murcia to Cartagena. Eventually, a small mosque was built. These architectural connections illustrate the development of the area across different periods, without the individual remains being limited to a single era.

Water and agriculture

Traditional agriculture in Aljucer included, in particular, the cultivation of lemons, oranges, peaches, apricots and plums. Closely connected with this is the history of water management: traditionally, Aljucer had seven water-powered mills of the “maquilero” type. Four of them stood along the Acequia de Barreras, two along the Acequia de Alguazas and one along the Acequia del Batán.

The southern branch of the Huerta de Murcia irrigation system also runs through Aljucer: the Acequia Mayor de Alquibla, or Barreras. The names of the waterways and mills preserve not only technical connections, but also the traditional link between irrigation and agricultural use.

Festivals and culinary themes

Around 15 September, Aljucer celebrates the festival of Dolores de María. A procession takes place on the following Sunday, led by the patron saint Nuestra Señora de los Dolores. The Festividad de los Dolores de María celebrations also include the Festival Internacional de Folclore.

In May 2026, the “Entre Huertas y Fogones” series began at La Huerta de los Sentidos in Aljucer, featuring gastronomic workshops. The four Wednesday sessions were intended to combine theory and practice using locally sourced ingredients and traditional techniques.
