Holiday apartment in Lorquí: Huerta, Culture and Río Segura

Lorquí combines the landscape of the Río Segura with a distinctive local history. The river crosses the town between reed beds, greens extensive orchards and forms a contrast to the nearby whitish hills. The town centre lies on a promontory overlooking the Vega and consists of narrow streets with a Moorish-influenced layout. Cabezo de la Ermita is the highest point of the town centre.

Culture and History

A central cultural site is the Templo Parroquial de Santiago Apóstol. Pedro Gilabert built it between 1765 and 1799. Inside are three works attributed to Francisco Salzillo: Saint Joseph, Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and La Dolorosa. Semana Santa in Lorquí also has a centuries-old history. It is shaped by processions, the Santo Desenclavamiento and sculptures by Salzillo. Lorquí is also home to the only Nazareno by Salzillo in the Región de Murcia.

Water Management and Cave Dwellings

The history of the irrigated Huerta includes the Noria del Rapao. It has been documented since the 18th century, is probably older and has been designated an asset of special cultural interest. The waterwheel has 112 lifting buckets and 156 paddles and once irrigated more than 300 tahúllas. The Noria del Marqués de Corvera is a restored iron-and-wood waterwheel with a diameter of approximately 4.5 metres.

Another distinctive form of cultural heritage is Lorquí’s cave dwellings. They are protected by the public administration because of their historical, artistic and ethnological value. Some of these cave dwellings have been converted into small museums, including the cave of the “Los Tablachos” family.

Routes through Lorquí

The Ruta Lorquí Histórico includes a visit to the Templo Parroquial de Santiago Apóstol as well as viewpoints overlooking the town centre and the Huerta. At the same time, it invites visitors to explore the streets of Lorquí from Plaza del Ayuntamiento uphill to the Cabezos de Escipión and de la Ermita.

The Ruta del Río Segura y Huerta de Lorquí illustrates traditional fruit and vegetable farming through its waterwheels and irrigation channels. The Sendero Azul from Lorquí to Los Palacios is a linear route suitable for pedestrians and cyclists. It runs through the Huerta de Lorquí parallel to the Río Segura; it can be accessed from either end.

Sounds and Local Traditions

The Ruta Mapa Sonoro de Lorquí creates an acoustic portrait of the town by linking sounds with the space, culture and traditions of Lorquí. The Jira de San Antón has a seasonal connection: in January, residents gather for an outdoor picnic.
