Holiday apartment in Santa Gertrudis: fiestas, pilgrimage and culture

Santa Gertrudis reveals its special character through festivals, pilgrimage traditions and cultural encounters. The dates of 3 and 4 February and the period from 16 to 18 November serve as reference dates for the Fiestas de Santa Gertrudis; the dates may vary from year to year.

Culture

A comprehensive refurbishment was carried out in the atrium of the Iglesia de Santa Gertrudis through a municipal initiative. The fountain, street furniture and landscaped areas were renovated. Another cultural landmark is the Cuadrilla de Santa Gertrudis de Tercia. It is associated with Christmas singing as well as pasodoble and traditional dances. The festival traditions also include the auction of the famous large Tortada.

Festivals

A richly decorated meringue Tortada is prepared as part of Santa Gertrudis's festival tradition. It serves as the prize in a tombola held to benefit the festivities. The feast day in honour of Saint Gertrude also has a strong culinary tradition: the residents share a meal featuring the classic dish arroz con pava, consisting of rice and turkey.

The Fiestas de Santa Gertrudis also include activities and games for children, as well as pétanque competitions for men and women. The traditional Encuentro de cuadrillas de Santa Gertrudis was resumed after several years without being held. It formed part of a cultural programme featuring a total of ten Cuadrilla gatherings between November and March in the municipality of Lorca.

For Santa Gertrudis, the Fiestas de la Candelaria were announced for the event period from 23 to 25 January 2026.

Pilgrimage

One of the traditions is a long pilgrimage through the fields of Marchena and Tercia. During the pilgrimage, the procession can stop in individual districts and at houses at the residents' request. The musicians of the Cuadrilla de La Hoya performed traditional dances from Lorca, including Jotas, Malagueñas and Parrandas.

Routes

The third section of the Camino de las Ermitas is a 16.88-kilometre one-way route. It begins at the Ermita de Santa Gertrudis and passes several other hermitages before reaching the Ermita del Burruezo.
