La Majada – Culture, Agriculture and Trails

In the centre of the hamlet of La Majada stands the single-nave Ermita de La Majada beside the road leading from Atalaya to Los Canteros. The church dates from 1735. Remains of Roman pottery can also still be seen in La Majada.

Culture and History

The culture and history of La Majada include the Teatro de La Majada, which was inaugurated in 1924. During its renovation, the roof and toilets were repaired, and the surrounding garden areas were also significantly improved. The Huerta de Cañete is a historic hydraulic and agricultural complex in La Majada. It was created through the use of water from the Fuente de Cañete, accessed via a mine shaft or gallery. The main architectural features of the Huerta de Cañete are still preserved.

The remains of the Molino de la Huerta de Cañete are located in the immediate vicinity of La Majada. The shaft of the old water mill is lined on the inside with ceramic rings arranged one above another, known as atanores, and is considered an element of medieval Andalusian hydraulic architecture.

Landscape

La Majada is surrounded by an agricultural landscape comprising the areas of Cabezo Negro, Recuenco, Cabezo Muñoz and Los Alamicos; around 400 wells were built there to supply citrus and stone-fruit cultivation. Since the 1980s, La Majada’s agricultural development has focused primarily on the use of citrus groves, encouraged by water transfers and the spread of drip irrigation. Trails

The El Saladillo–La Majada route follows quiet roads and tracks through rambla landscapes, gentle hills and extensive areas of dry farming, ending in La Majada. To reach Calentín Castle, take the road from Mazarrón city centre towards La Majada and La Atalaya: between kilometre 9 and 10, turn right towards La Majada. A path then leads close to the fortress; from there, the ascent through the terrain is somewhat difficult.

Festivals and Cuisine

At the Majada festivals, the Virgen de La Purísima is also honoured in summer, on 8 September. During the Majada festivities, tasting migas ruleras and chocolate with pestiños is a firmly established tradition.
