Holiday apartment in Retamalejo – Caserío and hiking trails
The Caserío del Retamalejo consists of around ten completely abandoned houses. The combination of clear architectural forms, former uses and small-scale details beneath the roofs alone makes the place tangible.
Culture
The houses are two-storey rectangular buildings with gabled roofs and hollow bricks. The houses of the Caserío del Retamalejo display similar architectural forms and a comparable choice of materials. They reveal the arrangement, composition and structure of the rural settlement core.
The upper floor of almost all the houses contains a kitchen with a fireplace and a storage cupboard built into the wall. An oven was located in a niche in the fireplace, where bread and baked goods were made in the past. The upper floor was used to store the almond harvest or grain. There were dovecotes beneath the roofs; triangular openings in the upper part of the façades served as entry points for the pigeons.
The construction of the roofs also points to a traditional building method: beneath the tiles is a framework of beams and reeds bound together with esparto-grass ropes. The ground floors of the ancillary buildings appear to have served as animal stalls or haylofts, and in some cases as chicken coops. The site also contains a heavily deteriorated oven, which may have been a lime kiln.
The site includes a covered well that contains water during the summer months. The Caserío del Retamalejo bears catalogue number 151033 and is assigned protection level 2.
Location and route
The Caserío del Retamalejo is located in the southeast of the municipality of Caravaca de la Cruz. A paved turning leads to the foot of the Casas del Retamalejo and ends there.
