Culture and history

The small Ermita de la Virgen del Carmen in El Portús is a rectangular building dating from 1924 that was restored in 1991. The Ermita de la Virgen del Carmen de El Portús offers views of the Mediterranean; swimming is possible at its beach.

Every summer, the residents of El Portús stage a re-enactment of the Portusium Jábega. They use a floating net and subsequently return all the fish caught alive to the sea. In the Bay of El Portús, the Jábega was formerly a form of seine fishing carried out from the shore, in which the fishermen pulled the net ashore using a hauling rope. This juxtaposition places the present-day summer performance directly alongside the former form of fishing.

Paths by the sea

The PR9 route leads from Playa del Portús via Campillo de Adentro to La Azohía. Campillo de Adentro is 10 km away and La Azohía is 12 km away. Thus, both named points are part of the same route, which begins at Playa del Portús.

The GR92 coastal path from El Portús to Punta de la Azohía passes several secluded coves that can be visited on foot or by boat. Kayak trips start in El Portús or La Azohía and stop at the coves along Cartagena’s western coast.
