Holiday apartment in Mula: Rock Art, Museums and Living Traditions

A significant cultural event in Mula is the Noche de los Tambores: it is recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Internacional and is part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage.

At the Museo Ciudad de Mula, the permanent exhibition “El Legado de Mula en la Historia” takes visitors from prehistory to the city’s more recent history. The museum also offers guided tours by prior reservation for groups of more than 10 people.

The Casa Pintada building, which houses the Museo Cristóbal Gabarrón, was built around 1770 and classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural in 2009. At the Museo Cristóbal Gabarrón, you can see the permanent exhibition featuring the artist’s permanent collection, which highlights various facets of his work in painting and sculpture.

History

The Museo de Arte Ibérico El Cigarralejo is housed in the former 18th-century Palacio del Marqués de Menahermosa. Its exhibition includes more than 80 grave goods from the Iberian necropolis of El Cigarralejo, as well as pottery, stone sculptures and weapons. At the El Cigarralejo archaeological site, visitors can see an Iberian settlement, its necropolis and the sanctuary.

Los Villaricos is a Roman rural settlement that developed between the 1st and 5th centuries AD. It is also home to Spain’s largest excavated oil mill.

The El Milano complex has been one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites of the Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin since 1998. The Abrigo del Milano features both Levantine naturalistic and schematic rock paintings. Visits to the Abrigo del Milano are currently not possible due to improvement works on the access route.

Nature and Trails

Hiking, cycling and environmental education activities are possible at Fuente Caputa. The Vía Verde del Noreste can be used for walking or cycling near the former railway station of Los Baños de Mula.

A local route on the middle slope of Cerro del Castillo connects the higher-lying neighbourhoods of the city of Mula with the Castillo de los Vélez. A viewpoint in Mula offers views of the Río Mula, the Embalse de la Cierva, Mula’s fertile Huerta, the Sierra Espuña and the Castillo de los Vélez.

Festivals and Markets

The Noche de los Tambores lasts from midnight on Martes Santo until 4 p.m. on Miércoles Santo. The tradition also takes place on the morning of Viernes Santo and on Domingo de Resurrección. The Mercadillo de El Portón de la Placeta offers live demonstrations of traditional crafts, tastings, and participation in activities and entertainment.
