Holiday apartment in Cieza – Rock art, gorges and culture

Cieza combines archaeological evidence with striking landscapes and paths along the Segura. The Cueva-Sima de la Serreta contains Palaeolithic, Levantine and schematic rock art; rock art of these types from several caves in the area has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. The cave also contains more than fifty rock-art figures distributed across two panels and belonging to schematic rock art, including some figures in the semi-naturalistic style. Evidence of settlement there dates from the Neolithic through Romanization to the Islamic Middle Ages.

Nature

The Cañón de Almadenes is almost 4 kilometres long and more than 150 metres deep. It is a habitat for various birds of prey, including the Bonelli's eagle, and is considered the region's most important refuge for the Eurasian otter, with the largest population of this species.

Culture and history

The Medina Siyasa archaeological site comprises around 700 houses built in the 11th century; its heyday was in the 12th and 13th centuries. Some of the houses, together with the associated streets and walls, can be seen at the site. The Museo de Siyasa displays scale models of houses 6 and 10 from Medina Siyasa. It also has a collection and exhibition with more than 90,000 objects from archaeology, art, science and ethnography.

The Balcón del Muro is part of the historic townscape, an ensemble consisting of an old fortress from the 15th century and the present-day wall built in 1898. The Basílica de Ntra. Sra. de la Asunción has three naves; the main façade features reliefs with Baroque volutes. The Pequeño Museo del Esparto documents the traditional manual processing methods for esparto in Cieza and displays the equipment and tools used in the process. The museum offers visits by appointment, during which esparto craftsmanship and the production of yarns and scouring pads are demonstrated. The Museo Molino de Teodoro is located in an old mill dating from 1507. Cieza also hosts a feria and patron-saint festivities in honour of San Bartolomé.

Paths and landscapes

The Ruta de los Puentes runs for 7.5 kilometres across various bridges and footbridges along the Segura through Cieza. The Sendero Azul Paseo Ribereño runs along both banks of the Segura through Cieza and encompasses a variety of landscape areas as well as diverse flora and fauna. The Vía Verde del Chicharra Cieza is a 13.7-kilometre walking and cycling route along the former railway line of the railway known as the “Chicharra”. The section of the Vía Verde del Chicharra Cieza in Cieza is also part of the Camino de la Vera Cruz pilgrimage route to Caravaca.

The Vía Verde de la Floración de Cieza runs for almost 10 kilometres and can be combined with other paths to form an almost 40-kilometre circular route. The flowering season of the Floración de Cieza falls at the end of winter and attracts visitors to the fields with peach, plum, almond, apricot, Paraguayo and nectarine trees.
