El Albujón showcases its history through buildings, waterways and traditional festivals. Among protected cultural heritage sites, religious landmarks, historical events and modern routes, a multifaceted picture of the town emerges.

Culture and History

One of the notable buildings is the Casil de Arriba watermill in El Albujón. It is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural and listed in the inventory under number 152. The tower and a large square basin have been preserved, while no machinery remains.

The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was built on the foundations of the former Ermita de El Albujón. Its floor plan follows the shape of a Latin cross. There are four chapels on each side of the nave; an elevated choir is located above the entrance.

The Ermita Virgen del Rosario-La Mina also combines religious use with architectural details. The chapel in El Albujón is a place where religious services are held. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross, and its furnishings also include a choir and a pulpit. It was restored in 1992. The Ermita de la Ascensión del Señor is located in Lomas del Albujón; it is also a chapel where religious services are held.

The historic Torre del Albujón served as an observation and lookout point at the entrance to the Campo de Cartagena. The Battle of El Albujón was fought nearby in 1706, preceding the recapture of Cartagena.

Water and Mobility

In historical times, the Rambla del Albujón formed the southern boundary of the Murcian municipality. Its waters were already being used by several farmers in 1509. A commission was established for this purpose and drew up a plan involving simple water-management works.

A more recent connection is provided by the completed Santa Ana–El Albujón cycle path, which connects Santa Ana with El Albujón. The completed project aimed to promote sustainable mobility, improve accessibility and encourage healthy activities.

Local Life

A local coffee tradition is associated with Bar Pedrín: from 1947 onward, it helped make asiático, a typical coffee drink from Cartagena, well known in El Albujón.

Religious festivals also shape the course of the year. The Romería a Caballo ran along Avenida de la Constitución, passed the chapel through Los Garcías and Las Casas, and then returned to the town centre. In La Mina, a procession in honour of the Virgen del Rosario takes place on 8 October. The patron-saint festivities in honour of San Juan Bautista took place in El Albujón from 19 to 28 June 2026; on 24 June, a traditional procession of the patron saint passed through the town's streets.
