The Parque Regional Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro del Pinatar is an 856-hectare wetland between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea. As a wetland of international importance, it provides a habitat for numerous bird species that breed and rest here.

Nature

For exploring the Parque Regional, visitors can use the designated paths and tracks for hiking and cycling. The Sendero Azul Senda de los Tarays is a separate route, an easy nature trail in San Pedro Del Pinatar. The Senda de los Tarays runs parallel to a freshwater canal that surrounds the salt flats and flows into the Mediterranean Sea. Along this route, visitors can observe various bird species, particularly from a viewing point. This also offers a panoramic view of the salt flats. The park's landscape also includes Playa de Torre Derribada, which is located in the Parque Regional Salinas y Arenales de San Pedro.

The Salinas de Coterillo are still in operation. The Centro de Visitantes Las Salinas contains an exhibition room, a screening room and information materials; binoculars can also be borrowed there free of charge. The Encañizadas represent a traditional form of fishing: this system of Arabic origin uses the movements of fish between the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea to catch them in a labyrinth of reeds and nets.

Culture

The connection with the Mar Menor is also reflected in the Museo del Mar. The museum is dedicated to the art of fishing and displays, among other things, shells, fish jaws, mollusc shells, miniatures of typical fishing equipment from the Mar Menor, knots and cartographic maps. Remains of Roman residential buildings were discovered at the Roman archaeological site Yacimiento romano de La Raya.

Further collections are housed in the Museo Municipal Palacio Barón de Benifayó. On display are terrestrial and underwater archaeological finds, fossils and materials from prehistoric cultures of the southeast. The Semana Santa de San Pedro del Pinatar in the Mar Menor is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest.

The Baños de lodo in the salt flats' ponds represent a special way of using the salt flats. There, the mud can be applied with a spatula or by hand and then rinsed off with saline water from the salt flats.
