Holiday Apartment in Lorca: Baroque City, Museums and Semana Santa

Lorca combines the history of a medieval fortress, Baroque heritage and vibrant traditions. The city was designated a historic-artistic site in 1964 and is known as the “Baroque City” because of the significant Baroque monumental heritage in its old town. Lorca Castle is a medieval fortress dating from the 11th to the 13th century, which was used over time to defend the border between the kingdoms of Murcia and Granada. Under the name Fortaleza del Sol, the complex was transformed into a themed venue for tourist visits and the communication of cultural heritage.

Culture

One of the city’s defining buildings is the Palacio de Guevara, also known as Casa de las Columnas, which is considered the most important civil Baroque building in the city of Lorca. Open to visitors as a house museum, it displays original paintings, lamps and furniture from the 18th to the 20th century. The former collegiate church of San Patricio was built between 1536 and 1780 to a design by Jerónimo Quijano; its interior is strongly influenced by the Renaissance.

The castle also preserves evidence of Jewish history. In the synagogue and the Jewish quarter of the fortress, the base of the Torah shrine, the Hechal, and the pedestal of the Bimah have been preserved. The synagogue is considered the only synagogue in Spain with these surviving elements. The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de Lorca displays archaeological finds from the synagogue, including 27 reconstructed lamps made from more than 2,600 glass fragments, as well as fragments of Hanukkah menorahs, ceramics, buckles, rings and coins.

Museums and Traditions

The MASS, Museo Azul de la Semana Santa, is housed in the former Hospital de Beneficencia de San Juan de Dios and presents the heritage and history of the Paso Azul brotherhood. Its main focus is Lorca’s embroidery tradition, which is officially listed as a candidate for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. The MASS embroidery workshop can be visited from Monday to Friday.

The muBBla, Museo de Bordados Paso Blanco, is located in the monumental complex of the Santo Domingo convent. The complex also includes the former Santo Domingo church and the Rosary Chapel. The muBBla displays handmade silk and gold embroideries that are officially listed as candidates for UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status. The Cámara de las Maravillas also presents six of the first embroideries in Spain to be recognized as Assets of Cultural Interest, or BIC for short.

Lorca’s Semana Santa is recognized as a Festival of International Tourist Interest. The processions of Lorca’s brotherhoods run along Avenida Juan Carlos I.

Nature

Another side of the municipality is showcased by the Vía Verde de Almendricos. It begins or ends at the railway stop Almendricos, a district belonging to the municipality of Lorca. The route is 6.6 kilometres long and runs alongside the Sierra de Enmedio protected Site of Community Importance. Within the city, Las Alamedas is Lorca’s most important urban green space, offering opportunities for walking and sports.
