Molina de Segura brings together Andalusian history, long-standing traditions, wetlands and paths along the Río Segura within a compact area. This diversity is particularly evident in the museums, historical routes and natural areas that reveal the different facets of the town.
Culture and History
MUDEM preserves and presents the remains of the Andalusian city walls of Molina de Segura, recovered in 2004 and belonging to the Andalusian fortifications of Hisn Mulina. The Museo Horno del Concejo y Casa del Folclore is located in the Barrio del Castillo in a house dating from the 17th to 18th century, built in the style of vernacular architecture. The museum includes a Moorish oven, which has been documented since 1491. In addition to the section showing bread-making, it has an area dedicated to the folk music and folk dances of Molina de Segura.
The Museo Etnográfico Carlos Soriano displays traditional clothing from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as miniatures of equipment from the Huerta and traditional water management. The Centro La Albarda de Ritos y Tradiciones del Campo de Molina presents the traditional ways of life of the Campo de Molina. It also explores its geographical diversity and traditional life, human influence on the environment and its contribution to the preservation of ecosystems.
The Molina Medieval route passes through the Barrio del Castillo and covers eight centuries of history. Another historical perspective is offered by Entre Chimeneas, a guided tour regularly organised by the Ayuntamiento of former factory sites in Molina de Segura. The Zoco de Guadalabiad adds to the cultural offering as a crafts market with on-site workshops and demonstrations.
Nature and Wetlands
The Campotéjar Lagoons are a wetland of international importance. They attract numerous species of waterbirds, including endangered species as well as the two critically endangered species White-headed Duck and Marbled Duck. A 1.105-kilometre nature trail runs around the lagoons and can be walked in a circuit. The Centro de Información y Acogida a Visitantes Lagunas de Campotéjar provides information and explanations about the environmental value of the lagoons, waterbirds and protected species.
The Parque Ecológico Vicente Blanes includes public recreational facilities, an arboretum, a camping area and landscaped paths. The park also features a birdwatching point and the La Loma and Lúgar viewpoints. Thus, in addition to the wetland, Molina de Segura offers natural areas with different designs, their own facilities and viewpoints.
Paths along the Río Segura
From Molina de Segura, the Vía Verde del Noroeste forms the final section of the Camino de Levante pilgrimage route. The destination of this route is the Holy City of Caravaca de la Cruz. The Campus de Espinardo–Alguazas section passes through Ribera de Molina and Torrealta to Molina de Segura and runs parallel to the Río Segura.
