Discover Fenazar: Holiday Apartments, Church and Pilgrimage Routes

Fenazar combines a distinctive church, traditional routes, religious traditions, and dry landscapes with public spaces for sport and recreation. Traces of former transport routes, areas shaped by agriculture, and present-day amenities come together to create a townscape where cultural history and everyday life exist closely side by side.

Culture

Fenazar’s built heritage includes the church of Nuestra Señora de Los Ángeles del Fenazar, whose construction began in 1907. Its exterior resembles a battlemented fortress. Inside, the church is divided into three naves: a higher central nave and two side aisles. It also contains a simple wooden altarpiece featuring an image of Our Lady of the Angels, the settlement’s patron saint.

Another historical reference leads to La Hoya in El Fenazar. The site is regarded as the oldest central settlement core of El Fenazar and as the location of the earliest human presence there. La Hoya is also associated with Carthaginian coins from the 3rd century BC, which travellers are said to have lost there. The history of the routes also reaches far back: a route from Alicante to Archena, laid out before Roman times, passed through Fortuna and Fenazar.

History and Routes

Archaeological finds in Fenazar may indicate that, in antiquity, the place was an important transit point and a route to the thermal springs of Archena, Fortuna, or Mula. The name “Camino Viejo de Orihuela” has also been preserved in Fenazar. The townscape therefore reflects not only individual historical names, but also connections between the settlement, travel routes, and the surrounding area.

The Camino de Lignum Crucis also passes through El Fenazar. This is a pilgrimage route between Granja de Rocamora and the Santuario de la Vera Cruz in Caravaca de la Cruz. The patron-saint festivities of El Fenazar express a particularly strong religious tradition: they are dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels and combine religious events with music, sport, children’s games, and popular traditions.

Traditions

The Romería de la Virgen de los Ángeles is part of the local festival tradition. On the first Sunday in May, the image of the Virgin returns from the Ermita de Campotejar to its church in El Fenazar. Pilgrims accompany it on foot and in decorated floats. The procession thus combines the religious occasion, the route between the two churches, and a communal form of celebration, with these elements remaining closely integrated.

Landscape and Agriculture

Fenazar is situated in very dry landscapes with only sparse vegetation, apart from some low scrub plants. At the same time, land use has partly changed: in recent years, some of the dry fields characteristic of Fenazar have been converted into irrigated farmland. Agriculture is Fenazar’s most important economic sector; significant quantities of citrus fruits and other fruit are produced there in particular.

Outdoor Spaces and Sport

Parque Deportivo El Fenazar is an outdoor space for recreation and sport in El Fenazar. It includes a children’s play area covered by a pergola that provides shade. The park also has an outdoor calisthenics area, as well as a futsal court and a basketball court. This offering is complemented by a new public caliche court, which was opened as an outdoor space for traditional sport and recreation.

The recreational infrastructure of the caliche facility includes partial fencing, retaining walls, benches, and litter bins. This public space therefore accommodates various forms of use: exercise, traditional sport, and spending time outdoors are structured by the facilities provided.

Accommodation

When comparing holiday apartments in Fenazar, check the exact location, accommodation type, and possible occupancy on the respective listing page. Also pay attention to which services are included, which components make up the total price, and which booking or cancellation conditions apply. Even for an option generally described as accommodation, these points should be individually verifiable. The specific details shown for each listing are decisive. This makes it possible to compare different holiday apartments objectively.
