Holiday apartment in Puerto Lumbreras – Culture, Waterways and Starry Skies
Puerto Lumbreras can be explored through unusually diverse evidence of the past: Islamic fortresses and cave houses, historic hydraulic structures, ecclesiastical art, traditional craft techniques, festive processions and an astronomical observatory are among the defining points of interest in the town and its surroundings.
Culture
Castillo de Nogalte is an Islamic medieval fortress built around the 13th century and designated as a “Bien de Interés Cultural”. Its strategic location lies above water sources and natural routes towards Lorca, Granada and Almería. The Medina Nogalte heritage complex also includes a 12th-century Islamic fortress and more than one hundred cave houses. Together, they form a remarkable cave-settlement site in southeastern Spain.
In the historic centre of Puerto Lumbreras stands Casa de los Duendes, a 19th-century building that forms part of the Medina Nogalte heritage complex. It houses the museographic collection on the graphology of Augusto Vels and is used for temporary exhibitions, workshops, film screenings and conferences. Several Casas Cueva have been restored since 1996 and equipped with interpretive features. They illustrate life in these distinctive buildings, as well as the history and cultural and ethnographic heritage of Puerto Lumbreras.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Rosario is an 18th-century church with a Latin-cross floor plan that was remodelled several times in the 19th and 20th centuries. A dome built around 1820 rises above the crossing; the furnishings also include a 17th-century Ecce Homo painting and a 19th-century organ. Museo y Centro Folklórico Virgen del Rosario provides space for cultural and folkloric activities and performances in Puerto Lumbreras.
Water and Routes
Fuente de los Caños remains a functioning water source and forms part of the town’s Ruta del Agua. This route passes the historic hydraulic mills of Jerez and Los Arcos and explains how they work, as well as how water is distributed through canals and dividers. The water-management heritage also includes the El Caño y Contracaño system. It consists of filtering galleries based on the qanat principle that collect water from the Rambla de Nogalte.
A designated cycle route is also among the documented paths in the area: Sendero MTB de los Escipiones has been incorporated into the IMBA trail network. The craft and agricultural history remains closely linked to the materials and resources of the landscape, without the individual examples losing their respective functions.
Nature and Skies
Cabezo de la Jara is a protected natural area designated as an LIC at an altitude of 1,247 metres, with very low light pollution. The nature interpretation centre at Cabezo de la Jara features exhibitions about the rambla, the 1973 flood, soil loss and life beneath the holm oak. For observing the night sky, there is the Observatorio Astronómico de Cabezo de la Jara: guided visits include an introduction to astronomy, observing the sky with the naked eye, and viewing important celestial objects through telescopes and other instruments available at the observatory.
Sendero Astronómico is an ecotourism trail just under 1,500 metres long, with a scale model of the solar system, two sundials and a moon clock. Another spatial point of reference is Mirador de Medina Nogalte. From there, the panoramic view extends across large parts of Puerto Lumbreras and the surrounding mountain ranges.
Traditions and Crafts
Casa Taller del Artesano presents local craft techniques in workshops and offers the opportunity to purchase various handicrafts. Casa Museo Romera houses an extensive collection of local craftwork, which can be visited. Traditional products include Alfombras de Plaita, also known as esparto mats or “Esteras”. They are made entirely by hand, beginning with the harvesting of the esparto grass plant.
The festival calendar includes religious processions and local patron-saint celebrations. Semana Santa in Puerto Lumbreras includes processions on Palm Sunday, Holy Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday. The Good Friday procession of Semana Santa de Puerto Lumbreras includes an Encuentro de Saetas, during which various Cantaores sing as the religious images pass by.
The Fiestas Patronales in honour of the Virgen del Rosario, the patron saint of Puerto Lumbreras, take place every year during the first week of October. The programme includes, among other events, a float procession, a craft market, a midday Mass, a flower-offering ceremony and a procession in honour of the Virgen del Rosario.
Regional Cuisine
Traditional cuisine is also part of the region’s character. Migas is a typical local dish made from wheat flour or breadcrumbs. It is served with additions made from pork-slaughter products, young garlic, sardines and grapes. Traditional Matanzas in Puerto Lumbreras include homemade sausages, among which Morcilla is particularly notable.
