Holiday apartment in Sangonera la Verde: Trails, Nature and Festivals

Sangonera la Verde reveals its natural side particularly along the PR MU34 Camino de Los Arejos. The approximately 7,200-metre-long circular trail has a moderate difficulty level and leads through Mediterranean pine forests. Along the way are traditional houses, water reservoirs, channels and sheepfolds, bearing witness to the area’s former human use.

Hiking and Landscape

Another circular trail is the approximately 6,000-metre-long PR MU35 Cuevas del Buitre, which has a moderate difficulty level. It leads to a rock formation with caves and rock overhangs known as Cuevas del Buitre. The SL MU15 Sendero de la Familia, by contrast, is an approximately 2,500-metre-long circular trail with a low difficulty level. It was created for families with children and is equipped with information panels.

Higher viewpoints are also part of the trails described. One route leads to the 637-metre-high summit of Pico del Águila through Mediterranean woodland with Aleppo pines. From the summit, panoramic views extend across the Valle de Guadalentín. Another hiking trail begins in the Torre Guil residential development at the Casa de la Fuente del Perro and follows a forest track towards Las Carrascas. From a small saddle, a panorama opens up across the valley of the Río Guadalentín.

The geological formations are particularly evident along several routes. The PR MU52 Barranco Blanco circles a badlands formation created by the erosion of marl and also passes the remains of former agricultural activity. The PR MU53 Barranco de los Cañones runs along the middle to lower section of the Rambla de las Cuevas del Buitre. Along the way, it passes abandoned agricultural terraces and marl terrain visibly shaped by erosion.

Nature and Water Management

There are numerous fossils and geological formations shaped by erosion at the Rambla del Pocico. This is complemented by diverse vegetation associated with the rambla. Along the circular trail there are remains of traditional water management, including a gallery with light shafts called “La Pizorra”. From the Ermita de la Cruz, a circular trail leads through the area along the Rambla del Pocico, where visitors can explore the landscape’s human, cultural and natural heritage.

The historic water engineering of Sangonera la Verde includes the Estructura Hidráulica del Pocito. It comprises the remains of a former aqueduct that crossed the rambla from north to south, as well as a channel covered with large stone blocks.

Majal Blanco

The Majal Blanco Visitor Centre presents the ecological and cultural values of Majal Blanco municipal park, which forms part of the Carrascoy y El Valle Regional Park. It features a satellite overview showing the park’s trails, 3D viewers for exploring the landscape and an exhibition of real fossils. These fossils can be touched and viewed with magnifying glasses.

The access map for the PR MU53 Barranco de los Cañones shows Sangonera la Verde, the Torre Guil residential development, Plaza de las Moreras and the Majal Blanco trail network. It includes the PR routes PR-MU52, PR-MU53, PR-MU34, PR-MU35 and PR-MU55.

Culture and Festivals

Local traditions include the Las Verónicas sisterhood, which consists exclusively of women. The patron-saint festivities in honour of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles have their main day on 2 August and include dance events, traditional competitions and fireworks. The local festivities in honour of Santa Cruz take place in the Barrio del Palmeral at the beginning of May.

Holy Week holds a special place in the annual calendar in Sangonera la Verde. It comprises 350 members and three brotherhoods: the Cofradía de Jesús Nazareno, the Cofradía de San Juan y La Dolorosa and Las Verónicas. Processions take place on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

The present parish church of Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles developed from a small chapel dating from the 16th century. The site was known as “Ermita Nueva”. Torre Guil, a historic agricultural estate, also forms part of the historic surroundings. The surviving manor house on the road to Mazarrón is considered a particularly noteworthy building in the vernacular Baroque style and, despite its deterioration, is still standing today.
